Dyalek core: Andrew Letourneau & Denis Haché
Dyalek is a musical endeavour that arises from the minds of two creative musicians: Denis Haché (piano) and Andrew Letourneau (drums). The pair grew up in the same hometown in Northern New-Brunswick. After more than a decade of exploring the world independently, their paths cross again in Ottawa where they eventually play together for the first time. Soon they begin working on original compositions and as a matter of course, their musical aspirations lead them to the conception of a jazz group named Dyalek.
The sound of Dyalek is inspired both from modern jazz and classical music. These two genres are intelligently reconciled with compositions rising in the no man’s land that separates structured music and chaotic improvisation.
The raison d’être of the group is to create and play music that has something more than the prescribed and formalistic ways of what is abound in the music industry. For example, Dyalek’s compositions encompass odd meters, polyrhythm and polytonality. Playing in 5, 7 or 13 beats per measure creates some brilliant accent and adds a slight tension to the feel of the music. At the same time, the interweaving rhythms and tones adds richness and complexity to the groove and brings great synergy. The result is music that is challenging and exciting for the players, and simply fun and bewitching for their listeners.
A particular feature about Dyalek is that the group functions like a musical collective. Some would compare this (for the better of worse) as the musical equivalent of a promiscuous relationship since the core duo has a roster of guest musicians that they invite to perform with them. This brings freshness which enhances the inventiveness and novelty of their acts. It definitively guarantees a unique sound at every performance.
In 2007 Dyalek recorded its debut-album Misinterpretations. It contains 6 excellent compositions which take the listener for a refreshing ride. It translates a rich dialogue between the piano and the drums, as well as special guest instruments such as the saxophone, the vibes, the bass and the trumpet. It evokes a range of emotions that are fresh, inventive but devious. Each piece takes shape with a pleasant dose of freedom, self-expression and experimentation. The album is recorded live off-the-floor; in real time, with no special effects. The result is an album that speaks music, straight out!
About the album ''''Misinterpretations''''
The title itself can be easily misinterpretated, so let me explain.
The whole album revolves around music that goes somewhere, never knowing exactly where it''s going to go. In short: it takes the listener for a ride. Sometimes an abrupt change happens for no apparent reason, but most of the time the changes are gradual and the musicians make it ''''fit''''.
Another reason for the album title is the presence of polyrythms and polytonalties. In this case we can even speak of polymelodies. Polyrythms happen when there are many time signatures or rythms going on at once. Polytonalities is maybe a little more subtle, but there are plenty on Misinterpretations, for example on the title track there is almost a constant layering of different keys played together. The result is often perceived as dissonances, but it''s all part of the plan.
Next thing that stands out in this album is the use of odd meters. For example, it is not uncommon for Dyalek to play comfortably in 5, 7 or 13 beats per measure. It''s not important for the listener to know this because there is still the presence of a pulse throughout the music.
A big element of the album is of course improvisation. In every tune there is at least some room left for improvising. Sometimes there are improvised sections which can expand and almost become a new entity of its own. The result is that the music is different every single time.
The album Misinterpretations is recorded live off the floor. No overdubbing was made except for the trumpet on See One. Everything else is done in real time with no special effects added. The core of the band is Denis Haché (piano) and Andrew Letourneau (drums). The rest of the musicians on the record are special guests who contribute to the overall feel and sound of the album.
