In the early years of this nameless decade, a boy got a guitar and recorded songs on a stereo cassette player. His name was Joseph K Murphy, and almost 10 years later, his creations are known and enjoyed by many in the Seacoast New Hampshire scene. This time he is accompanied by a familiar group of musicians, dubbed The Best Friends Ever, consisting of brother/drummer Dan Murphy (formerly of Fyth, Tulip Sniper) and bass player/drummer/electronic artist The Attic Bat (Murkadee, Mary Gatchell), Murphy’s quirky pop compositions and weird-but-beautiful productions are once again taking center stage.
As 2007 was coming to a close, Murphy found himself tired and worn out musically. As a founding member of the award winning Murkadee, he had released two albums and an EP, opened for big name bands like Paranoid Social Club and Apollo Sunshine, pioneered artsy international music projects like The Man Who Was Thursday (with fellow artist John Herman) and won the hearts of all that come in contact with him. Now he was wrapping the band’s third album (to be released Spring ’08) and was in dire need of something fresh to work on. It was at this point, an intriguing e-mail was sent by brother Dan Murphy.
“He wanted to record, he figured I had songs lying around, he was right, and with in a week I had a vision for the whole project,” explains Murphy. In the month ahead, demos were distributed, chord charts were written, and recording sessions were held at break neck speed. By the end of January ’08, Joseph K Murphy and The Best Friends Ever had their first EP.
As far as taking the project out on the road and playing shows, things are still up in the air. The bulk of Murphy’s time still lies with Murkadee “I’ll do both and if people want me to go out and play these songs and hop on the keyboard, I’ll do it. If not, Murkadee will keep playing away and I’ll record The Best Friends Ever on the side,” Murphy says, adding “I’m here for your enjoyment. Tell me what you want from me!”
