MP3 Lipstik - There Is Only One Thing

Four sad hyper-literate songs using piano, cello, acoustic guitar and rolling drums to assemble a fragmented conversation about a relationship falling apart. Beautiful, grasping, aching.

4 MP3 Songs
FOLK: Folk-Rock, ROCK: Acoustic

Details:
Lipstik is the alter-ego and nom de plume of New York songwriter Sam Jacobs. Former failing indie label exec and manager to D-list reality television stars, Jacobs began writing songs after returning to the corporate world.

Jacobs remarks, "You know how it goes. I had issues that needed airing. Same old thing I guess." In late night bars, at 4 in the morning in Lower East Side apartments, he collected all the old song fragments that had lain dormant in his mind for years, accumulated like patches from a quilt. Stitching them together yielded bursting passionate rock songs swirling around mortality, his love affair with his wife, her battles with chronic pain, and all the other things people write about.

Jacobs titled the first collection ''Everything Is Good'' and started sending it out to fans, friends and industry folks in July 2006. The album is filled with courageous, graceful rock epics infused with a subtle darkness. Comparisons have ranged from traditional touchstones (Tom Petty, Wilco) to darker references. One critic called the pain song ''Erica'' "bluegrass Leonard Cohen" - growled vocals dripping death and addiction, brooding cello beneath a banjo, an insistent sing-along chorus.

Over 2007, Lipstik began stepping out more publicly playing shows, receiving song-writing awards, placement on industry A&R compilations and in independent film. To fill the void between official releases, Lipstik also created the Lipstik Music Club, a monthly email featuring a new song a month culled from the the glut of material pouring out of the jacked-open spigot.

2008 will see no fewer than five new releases from Lipstik including two EPs, a singles collection and and a home recorded LP all in addition to the formal follow-up to ''Everything Is Good'' titled ''Pain Is a Reliable Signal'' and produced by Paul Brill.

The most recent release is an EP titled ''There Is Only One Thing'' featuring four, sad slow songs recreating fragments of a conversation. Says Jacobs, "The idea for the new EP is kind of taking ''Erica'' from the first album to its natural extension. I wanted to feature some rolling drums, cello and piano around these darker folk songs. I was kinda thinking of Leonard Cohen and Veedon Fleece-era Van Morrison but who knows how it came out. It sounds kinda nice."

Right now, the songs are coming in bunches as Jacobs prepares to head back into the studio with Paul Brill. "I have too many ideas so getting them in some kind of focused order is proving difficult. But the EP sounds pretty good and I''m excited about the new LP with Paul. That''s as far as I can think ahead right now."

Says Jacobs "I think I''ll be here awhile. I have ideas and album names out through 2010 so as long as I can keep getting the players in place and getting good sounds from my crappy mics, I''ll be okay. I think about Wallace Stevens a lot. That''s what I''m going for. Beautiful words. As long as I can make it last."
