In the summer of 2005, Adam Afridi brought his acoustic guitar over to the home of Brian Bickel for what they thought was just an informal jam session before a Bob Dylan concert. What happened next, nobody would have guessed. In less than 3 months they had named themselves Difference Driver (a vague reference to their mutual daytime jobs in Marketing Research) and had written, recorded, and released their debut album ''Devil On My Shoulder'' entirely on the merits of their own talents, and determination.
The success of their first release ''Devil On My Shoulder'' merely whetted their appetite and recording began immediately for what would be their 2006 release ''Soul Seeker''. As a whole, ''Soul Seeker'' took on a more soothing and soulful sonic texture than did its predecessor. With reflective lyrics about life, love, loss, regret, and self-discovery, and more ''folksy'' instrumentation such as harmonica, mandolin, lap steel guitar, accordion, and keyboards, the result is a collection of songs that run the gamete of emotions from fear, aggression, confusion, joy, and sorrow.
Following the 2007 release of ‘Just B & Friends: B-Sides’ (a semi-solo project Brian recorded with the help of Adam and some other talented friends), Difference Driver returns to release their third album in just 2 ½ years in time for Spring 2008. ‘Checkout Time’ boils down the essence of Difference Driver to its barest essentials, and adds just a pinch of Bohemian spice to the cauldron. All of the key ingredients remain from their previous releases including the passionate introspective lyrics, and melodic hooks, but with just a dash of fun, and the melding of enough different influences to keep things interesting.
