Erdal Akkaya was born in Istanbul in 1974. He went to Libya when he was 6 years old. He first got aquainted with baglama while he was compleating his primary education here.
In 1984 Akkaya started working on an authentic style on baglama, the shelpe. In 1987 he took solfege lessons from Engin Baykal in ASM Music House. He went to Germany in 1989 to have musical education. Here he had tone-technique education for a short time. He came back in 1995.
He worked on studio and concerts with many musicians like Zülfü Livaneli, Özdemir Erdogan and Ferhat Livaneli. Akkaya who also worked as music director and did arangements made his first solo recording “Yağmurla Gelen” (Comes with the Rain) in 1997.
Between 1998 - 2001 Akkaya accompanied Zülfü Livaneli with his baglama and shelpe and made vocal music on his domestic and overseas concerts. Meanwhile he took stage with internationaly reknown masters like Mikis Theodorakis, Maria Farandouri, Liesbeth List, Al Di Meola, İlhan Ershahin, Ara Dinkjiyan, Henning Schmidt, Martin Lilich and Voelker Schmidt. In New York, Akkaya recorded an improvised baglama music for an ethnical hip hop work under for an İlhan Ershahin production. In 1999, Akkaya staged his first recital with the contribution of Duisburg Volks Hoch Schule. In 2002 he made the musics of the documentary “Bir Tutam Temre Otu” for TRT.
Working on recital and harmony with Prof. Jirair Arslanyan Akkaya recorded his second record “Ciğerparem” in May 2001. Making composition and working, the musician studied Mid Anatolia and Aegian regions. At present he is working with the well known Verdi price owner soloist of İstanbul Government Opera and Ballet, Elena Kember to improve his solo technique.
