NEW RENAISSANCE MESSAGE BOARD by iwarrior SEPT 02
Before I opine on this disc, I''ll have to admit to being somewhat of a novice and a skeptic when it comes to Christian metal. Maybe it''s the preachiness or the fact that many seem to merely imitate other secular, and more successful(commercially as well as creatively)bands. One thing I can tell you is that Faithbomb dodge those pitfalls by finding inspiration in Entombed, Fu Manchu, and Down and adding an idealistic vibe to cultivate their own inviting garden of sound.
Lead-off track "I Won''t" takes Entombed''s "Like This With The Devil", empties the Black Talon bullets inside, and replaces them with rubber ones. That may sound like a put-down, but nothing could be further from the truth as throughout much of the record, Faithbomb find strength in the nihilism of the Gothenburg sound only to turn it on its ear in their own way.
As I alluded to before, a heavy doom influence is prevalent also. This influence comes to the surface especially well on tracks 3 and 4. "Carry Me To Heaven" and "The Devil And Me" each wringing out one-hundred years of pain, blues, and agony with their Sabbatherian riffs.
The band doesn''t mind being eclectic in the vocals department either, as the band see-saws between a borderline grind bark, and a clean croon with a Hetfieldian growl acting as an effective fulcrum.
I commend the bravery of this disc. Instead of telling you what to believe or else, Faithbomb just state their beliefs via power chords for the listener to ponder, almost saying "If you''re with us cool, if you''re not, so be it". Long-haired hell-raisers fear not this disc, as these guys make Stryper look like a bunch of crass Jimmy Swaggarts. If that isn''t a recommendation, I don''t know what is. Ah. There''s that tingly feeling again. The only type of tingly feeling that comes when one hears some really, really good slamming groovetacular metal. That''s right. I said "groovetacular". How groovetacular? Faithbomb''s ''Bleed'', in my humble opinion, ranks up there with Eternal Decision, Oil, Eloi and Godsmack. Heavy, heavy, heavy. The production is superb, the playing is tight, and the sonics of this disc just grab you by the adams apple and won''t let go. Now, the lyrics are quite Christian, and in that I mean intelligent and uplifting at times, and then dark yet spiritual at other times. I do want to point out, though, that it seems the entire lyrics weren''t printed in the sleeve of the CD liner, and a quick surf to the faithbomb website (https://www.tradebit.com) uncovered nothing in the likes of fully printed lyrics. The vocals, however, are growly yet easy to decipher for those who''re particular about their lyrical intake. Bottom line, a worthy addition to your metal collection. Enjoy. RIGHT NOW, forget everything you think you know about Faithbomb. Forget that you ever heard ''The American Jesus'' whether you liked it or not. Four years after the release of their debut album, Faithbomb stands poised to rip your head off with a blistering album that will leave you wondering where this band''s been all your life. Yet it''s upon listening to it that my joy really overcomes me. I hear well structured modern metal (not nu-metal exactly as they do craft their groove) that is raw despite the excellent production, mean and stripped down. This is gritty southern grab you by the guts and kick your face in metal.
For the comparison section of this review I''ll say this album highly reminds of the new Down album with obvious pieces reminding me of Pantera, Superjoint Ritual and elements of Steve Rowe in the vocals...well Steve Rowe from the days of say Bloodworld where his vocals were still good yet highly understandable.
The only lyrics printed are selected lines from each song as the point was to make the listener curious about the exact lyrics of the songs and make them research it online. (The lyrics are on the Faithbomb website.)
In closing I''d just like to add that when this CD debuted at Cornerstone people who heard it were stunned. As I said at the beginning, forget everything you think you know about Faitbomb and look into ''BLEED'' it''s sure to impact you. D. LISTER - Deadzine Jul 2002
"Bleed" by Faithbomb is a great disc. I loved its groove metal riffs with the tough guy hardcore vocals and amazing drums will make you beg for more. I really love the song The Devil and Me. It was great! The music and its though provoking message were so true and relevant to this day and age.
Since this band is from Texas, they bring a BIG sound. I am telling you, this disk is hard edge and it is really good. The production was very decent, and it is very clear. I also enjoyed how the tracks didn''t drag. Not too long, and not too short. This album is definitely something you need to look for. THE PROJECT - Deadzine Jul 2002
"Bleed" is darker and heavier than "American Jesus" and features better production as well. Stylistically Faithbomb has pretty much remained true to their Texas groove-core sound, although they have added some elements of more modern metal styles. The shorter songs and a lack of guitar solos adds to this feeling as this seems to be the trend within nu-metal camps. Still, Faithbomb are no Limp Bizkit or Korn. Vocalist Rob Colwell sings in a raspy, low register voice but doesn''t let out even one rap. (Thank God!) When I popped this cd in the first thing I thought, when the music started was Oh great another Disciple rip off. Luckily I kept listening and ended up proving myself very wrong. These guys have a sound very unique, so unique that I''m still not really sure how to classify them. On their website (https://www.tradebit.com) they describe their music as, "Texas Metal," which is pretty accurate to a point. They are metal, but there are some definite blues influences mixed in for sure! You may say, "Blues and Metal?" well it makes for a really cool sound!
Faithbomb starts in hard and heavy, with a sound reminiscent to Wish For Eden, with deep growling vocals similar to Steve Rowe of Mortification. This music is so catchy it’s insane, this is the type of music that you can''t sit still while listening to. Not to mention the blunt straight forward message that makes it that much better! My favorite song on the album would definitely be The Devil and Me, its just so true, about the struggles and the ways the devil tries to keep us down and away from God. Stand out tracks on this album include I Won''t, The Devil And Me, Fear Within, and Word to The Wise.
This is a very strong album, and with Faithbomb in the studio working on new material I''m sure it will only get better. If you haven''t heard them before you should definitely check them out! If you heard their first album and didn’t like it, you should still check this cd out, you won''t be disappointed! Big ups to Rob for the hook up, keep up the good work!
