Details:
Michael Thomas was born in Providence Rhode Island as Michael Thomas Pontarelli. His Father was a bus driver and his mother occasionally worked as a nightclub piano player. Michael knew from an early age that he was destined for a life of entertainment. He was to follow in his Mother’s footsteps. She taught him to play the piano at an early age. In high school he learned to play the guitar and formed a band. They had some success and played many school arid family functions. After graduation the band broke up and Michael began his solo career of singing and playing the piano in restaurants and night clubs around Providence. He started by performing at his mother’s gigs and very shortly thereafter had his own places to perform. The life of a performer at this level is difficult. There are many changes of venues and much uncertainty. It wasn’t long until Michael felt the urge to try his hand in other parts of the country. He was a talented young follow with a desire to see the world. His first venture was to the windy city of Chicago. He played at the Hilton Hotel near O’Hare airport and had time to take a good look at this fabulous city. Then winter came. That was a revelation that caused changes and soon he was off to a tour of the cities of California. He wound up spending most of his time in San Diego. After he had seen most of the West it was time to move again. He packed up and headed to New Orleans. It was there at Pat O’Brien’s in the French quarter that he began to expand his skill as a vocalist. It was here that he first began to imitate the Johnny Mathis style of singing. That brought him much attention in the Big Easy. Yet, the call of the unknown was still there and this time it was Jacksonville Florida that called. There at the Hilton Hotel Michael performed in the lounge. At the time the Hilton was the hotel favored by all the big entertainers who came to do shows in the area. Michael was thrilled to be able to personally meet Elvis and Frankie Valli among many other celebrities. One night as Michael was performing a fellow with long hair came up to him and asked if he would be interested in coming to England and recording an album. This seemed very far fetched and Michael of course said yes and gave him some contact information. A few months later a letter arrived with tickets to London. After some investigation he determined that the person who had made the offer was lan Gillian, the lead singer of the rock group Deep Purple. After a few transoceanic phone calls Michael got on a plane for England. He was met at the airport with a Rolls Royce and was chauffeured to his accommodations a castle belonging to Mr. GilIian. During the next few months Michael recorded a compete album of standards and original songs some of which were written by Mr. GiIlian. Many of the selections were done with a full orchestra. The feature song was the classic “Daddy’s Home”. This experience was wild and exhausting for young Michael. When the recording was complete Michael returned home to the USA, this time Orlando. He resumed the life he had known and it all seemed like a dream until a large package came in the mail from England. It was the recording contract. It would require him to devote the next three years to touring and more recording, mostly in Europe. After much anguish he declined. It was summer and he went to one of his favorite resort areas to perform, Cape Cod. It was there at the famous Crown and Anchor that he once again established himself as a consummate entertainer. With winter approaching he made another move. This time he went to Key West Florida. There he has stayed for many years and become a part of the community and a fixture on the entertainment scene. When Michael is not touring with the “Diamonds in Paradise” show he can be seen at various local venues around the area. Check https://www.tradebit.com for information on his schedule.
