Phil Porter is a well known local gospel singer songwriter who has developed his gift of music as a writer, singer, and musician over the last thirty years in Nova Scotia and beyond. He writes what he knows; songs that touch the heart and soul of the audience and are often based on people he has met, experiences he has had, and the Bible stories he has known since childhood. Phil performs at churches, evangelistic meetings, and charity events whenever his busy schedule permits. In addition to his solo performances, he is the director and accompanist for the Dartmouth Men’s Choir and the pianist for both Foundation Baptist and Forest Hills Fellowship Baptist Churches.
Phil began his musical journey, like most young musicians, by taking piano lessons from a local teacher. One year later, after moving and changing teachers, he was told he would never be able to play the piano because he was not applying himself. He stopped taking lessons by “mutual agreement” and a year later he became the pianist in the church his former teacher attended. Since those early days Phil’s talent has continued to grow as he has played and sung in churches, groups, and on his own.
His most recent performance venues have included churches in Columbia, Missouri; Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; and along Nova Scotia’s south shore.
Phil has recently expanded his musical experience by beginning to record a demo album to showcase his talent, and is working toward the release of a professionally produced album to share his songs with a wider audience. The finished CD will include ten of Phil’s original songs in styles that range from “near to the blues” through “easy listening ballads” to “southern gospel” and will include a new Christmas song.
One recent listener, Libby Barrett, wrote to say, “The music and lyrics are beautiful and a wonderful Christian Witness. I was very moved as I listened to them…” Another concert goer said she was “moved to tears as (she) listened to the words that Phil sang, straight from his heart to (mine).”
