MP3 Pummeled About The Face - Unorthodox Anthology

We play original traditional metal with a unique sound of our own, not too intense, but surprisingly heavy at just the right times. Our music is a set of compositions, esoteric in some respects, yet diverse enough to be enjoyed by many.

UNORTHODOX ANTHOLOGY REVIEW:

The two members of Pummeled About The Face have self-recorded their fifth album, which was officially released on Halloween of this year. Since its inception in 1995, they say they have been playing (with a few lineup changes) original and cover music focused on “traditional” metal. With perpetually trudging drum beats, the thick riffs of the massively distorted electric guitar lumber in circles while the low-sung vocals follow them faithfully, rarely reaching too far from the main rhythmic/melodic ideas. With not a song under five minutes, some ranging to 10, the eight-song disc gives the listener ample time to sink into the experience. HISTORY OF PUMMELED ABOUT THE FACE:

It all started in autumn of 1995 when Doug and Troy discovered each others musical talents. Doug''s ability to play both the bass and the guitar (although not at the same time) was a plus. They soon found that their timing and song structure was impeccable.

By early 1996 they had composed 13 songs. Not feeling totally comfortable with their vocals, Doug asked a friend, Mike, to do the vocals on their first record. He agreed. Using the audio equipment he had available, Doug mixed the bass and lead guitar with the other tracks. By the end of 1996 they had recorded 13 songs on their first album: Keep Talking.

In 1997 they started searching for a bass player and a vocalist. Late in the summer of 1997, they found and agreed on a vocalist, Rob. They recorded their second album with 11 new songs, the much darker theme: Fangs For The Memories. Rob and Doug both did the vocals on the album. The lineup was short-lived. Troy needed a break from the band due to a personal crises. And it seemed that everyone had different agendas.

Into 1998 Doug continued to work with Rob. Soon, they went their separate ways and started their own separate projects. Phil, an old friend Troy used to work with called him up, interested in playing the guitar for the band. This motivated Troy to get back into the swing of things. Phil was one of the people they had asked to join a year before. The new lineup worked out well. Phil played the guitar, Doug back on bass, and Troy on drums. Both Phil and Doug did vocals. On November 21st, 1998 Pummeled About The Face had their debut performance at a party. It was a success. Later, a live album titled Debut Performance was released.

In 1999, they recorded their third album: Etched In Stone. It contained 10 new songs. On August 28, 1999 they performed at Firehouse Music. And another recent accomplishment was their website.

2000 started off on a good note. They performed at the Java Bean Cafe on January 7. It was a fun show. In March, Doug decided to leave the band in search of a new musical direction. It''s been a great five years with him. They played a private Halloween party in the autumn, on October 28. Although they were short a bass player, it was a success. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Before the year''s end, all of their records were put on CD including their debut performance.

2001 saw the release of their fourth album called Esoteric. It contained 11 songs.

2002 was a quiet year. Not much was done during the end of the year due to Troy moving.

Not much happened with PATF in 2003. Sometimes life is so busy, it is difficult to take the time for things that we enjoy.

In 2004 PATF digitally remastered their Esoteric album to improve sound quality. Also they performed at Cup of Joy Coffeehouse on November 13. It was a nice experience.

Pummeled About The Face celebrated 10 years in 2005 with the release of a best-of album called X. It contained 12 songs, 3 from each of their studio albums.

Pummeled About The Face was listed in the Encyclopaedia Metallum at https://www.tradebit.com in 2006. They started working on material for a new album, however that was delayed due to Troy having surgery.

Unorthodox Anthology was released in 2007. It was PATF''s fifth album with eight lengthy songs, totaling over 57 minutes, two of which were epics at over 10 minutes each. One of the epics is Vlad, the dark culmination of gothic folklore. The other is the instrumental Godspeed, inspired by Baroness Emmuska Orczy''s The Scarlet Pimpernel.
