Getting in on the ground floor is what it''s all about and beating the tastemakers to the booty is getting easier these days. Or, to put it another way, discovering a new band to venerate before everybody else gets there is a more immediate and fun pastime than say, waiting for the tooth fairy to come up with the moolah for that recently vacated space you now find yourself tonguing longingly. Gotta love the interweb! Like shooting fish in barrel, liberated you march forth...right? Okay, so you still need to know what doors to knock on - well here''s a doozy that''s ripe for plucking, though if you''ll excuse that phrase, and the next one, it''s more of a dog flap...so there ain''t no knocker. Recorded with Colin Moulding (XTC) in his secret laboratory of classic pop hook goodness somewhere in Wiltshire, this sharp three-tracker from The Sundogs is the first transmission of a band with a sweet future. It''s an emotionally charged wistful and warm take on English pastoral rock, albeit with a bit of grunge fuzz in the guitars and a delicious psychedelic tint constantly colouring and shading inside and outside the sound-field. These dogboys sure know their way around harmonies too and they let them unfurl thick and fast throughout the choruses. This is sure enough crafty stuff, played with an ear for the sublime and hearts as big as bouncy castles. Looking for touchstones? To these ears it wouldn''t be amiss to say there are elements in there of The High Llamas, Cardinal and the afore mentioned XTC, though only that last comparison gets close to the more rocking core of these songs, and really The Sundogs aren''t channeling anything but their own muse. This EP is just a ta ster for their first album which is close to being in the bag and promises to be even more blissed out still. Get in on the ground floor!
