Details:
Timecat is Portland-based songwriter/producer/multi-instrumentalist Rob Oberdorfer’s venue for darkly honest love songs and his fascination with cheap synthesizers.

Rob laid down the tracks (with the exception of some lovely backing vocals by Ladawn Sheffield) for “This Should Mean Nothing” locked away in his basement studio by himself, infusing his straightforward songs with a strange mix of atmosphere, noise and playfulness. The result is an album which is both grand and intimate, sprawling and focused, where pop hooks and noisy collages collide in a hazy world of confusion, chaos, and hope. The songs range from acoustic guitar driven folk (“The Whitest Lie”, “So Serious”) to keyboard driven pop (“Light the Bells”, “Never Made it Home”) to hallucinatory lullabies (“In My Blood”, “I’ll Set the Scene”). These stylistic leaps are bridged by atmospheric beds of grainy synthesizers, feedback loops and the narrative of confused love, lust, and loss.

Timecat is conceived as much as a multimedia art project as a band. Passing on the typical “indie” business model of writing an entire record, recording, and then endless touring as an outdated, anti-creative and overly-romanticized way of being a band, Timecat has more interesting things in mind. In addition to an ever-evolving live show involving a revolving cast of Portland musicians, there are plans for video projects, monthly download-only singles, interactive projects and other weirdness to keep things interesting.
