ROCK: Detroit Rock, ROCK: Hard Rock

Details:
From the moment the first track played, you know this is not your ordinary local band. The sound is a combination of a variety of different types of rock supplemented with catchy hooks and choruses. The band took their name from Thomas Alva Edison’s famous experiment recording “Mary Had A Little Lamb” on a piece of tinfoil, but the name fits this band without its historic importance. Tinfoil is a malleable metal that transforms its shape to fit whatever object it surrounds. Tinfoil changes musical styles to fit whatever the song needs. Paperplate Burrito’s musical styles range from pop, punk, hard rock, alternative to radio oriented rock. Singer/ guitarist Dave Harms weaves his way through the different musical styles, reinventing himself effortlessly. Bill Nicolls plays the drums with wild abandon to convention using tom fills in his own unique way. Bassist Chuck Jaco completes the band, allowing the trio to create a huge sound. Tinfoil has been compared to seemingly every national band, but their real strength lies in their ability to weave through different musical styles while maintaining their own unique identity.
When asked the story behind the CD’s title Harms replied, “A friend of mine was talking about an experience he had at a Thanksgiving Dinner served on paper plates. He called it a paperplate burrito because he had put so much stuff on it the paperplate bent up to resemble a burrito. After considering the songs our new CD contains, it seemed like the perfect title for us. The songs on the CD can be compared to a potluck picnic, a smattering of different styles from different backgrounds and tastes; a true Paperplate Burrito.”
For those who haven’t heard of Tinfoil before, they have been a part of Toledo’s music scene since their formation in 1991. Originally heralding from Harms’ hometown of Tiffin Ohio, Tinfoil played shows at Toledo clubs such as Headliners, Gator’z, The Club, Arlington Arcade, Carol’s, Whit’s End, Mickey Finn’s, Sharkey’s, the Crowbar, and others sharing the bill with many Toledo legends such as the Sprags, Stohl’n and Damien. Tinfoil now calls Toledo its home as all three members live either in the city or in surrounding suburbs. Nicolls is a Start High School graduate; Jaco hails from Northwood and now lives in Perrysburg; and Harms now lives in Walbridge. Tinfoil has released 13 of their own releases and has appeared on numerous compilation CDs. Last year, Tinfoil was featured on two different compilations from Midwest Nailgun Records, and will appear again on Midwest’s latest 2008 release. Midwest Nailgun’s distribution system stretches into 16 different countries. Tinfoil has digital distribution through Snocap and the new CD can be downloaded through their official website at https://www.tradebit.com or their myspace site at https://www.tradebit.com
Tinfoil has changed dramatically over the years starting as a fresh alternative band before the onset of Nirvana and the alternative revolution of the mid nineties. “We listened to bands like Sonic Youth, the Pixies and X in the eighties and we liked the way they explored new experimental ways of blending interesting lyrics and rock. Tinfoil rode the alternative wave of the mid nineties charting on the CMJ charts multiple times. Not satisfied with rehashing the same type of music over and over again, Tinfoil reinvented itself as a band in the late nineties. “Alternative was becoming just a phrase, a classification. Mainstream bands started calling themselves alternative to get radio play. Our style was becoming too diverse for it,” explains Harms. The band had a big break opening for Sponge in the winter of 1996, but fate intervened. “The drive shaft on our van broke on the way to the show. We just about froze to death on the side of 75. You can imagine the promoter’s surprise when the State Highway Patrol called them to let them know we weren’t going to make it.” Harms explained. “We were really disappointed because Sponge was breaking through nationally in 1996.”
Members have come and go out of the band. With each member change, the sound of the band has changed. “We still try and stay true to our original goal; exciting music coupled with interesting meaningful lyrics,” Harms said. “It is really hard to keep band members focused on the same goals. Being in a band is like being married to three or four people at the same time.” Chuck Jaco, the newest member of the band has been playing in local bands in the Toledo area for years including Positive Cheese and 12 Dive. “Being in Tinfoil allows me the freedom to develop my own style. I find it very liberating,” Jaco adds. “It is exciting to see where we are going next. I love being in a band that allows me to create and write.”
Never ones to rest on their laurels, Tinfoil have already started writing and recording their next release. “Paperplate Burrito was my initiation into studio recording. The results turned out great, but I am interested in expanding what I do on drums for the next one,” comments Nicolls. “Tinfoil writes songs that I want to hear on the radio. Its invigorating to be in a band likes this,” concludes Jaco. “It took the band two years to record and mix this CD, so it’s exciting to work on new material again,” adds Harms. “The response for Paperplate Burrito has been so positive; we’re hoping to build on it for our next release.”
