Some people have natural talent, others have to hone their skills - Approach exemplifies both. He emerged into the Kansas City scene in the late nineties, yet waited until 2002 to release his first proper release, Ultra Proteus. The reason? He wanted to be absolutely confident of his abilities behind the mic and proud of the of the music he was handing over to listeners. The result was a tight, funky album that showcased ‘Pro’s eased delivery and ability to throw any of a number of flows at a listener, all of which are entirely his own.
‘Pro’s following years were spent between Kansas City and Lawrence, KS working on a variety of projects. Included among the swath of releases were the Soiree EP, the re-release of Ultra Proteus on Coup d’Etat records, The Independent Success Story and Approach Presents the Nu featuring DJ SKU. He worked to promote hip-hop in local venues as something owners could and should celebrate, helping foster an environment that was nothing but fun – far from the stereotypes of chaotic violence that can keep owners from booking shows in their clubs. His hard work and his dedication to the artists around him has always been a hallmark of ‘Pro'' – friendships and collaborations with the artists around him have proven to be fruitful as these relationships continue to grow and expand not just in Kansas City and Lawrence but over the country, from Chicago and Miami to California.
2007’s Welcome to Share works like a bridge from Approach’s past to his future. Packed with hot electronic beats from San Francisco’s SALVA, the album features guest appearances by artists from KC, Lawrence and San Francisco. He was successful in creating an album that can be fully listened to over and over, not just for its hooks but for another of ‘Pro’s trademarks – lyrical consciousness. As Approach begins anew on the left coast, it’s a perfect way to showcase this MC who has always stayed true to himself, his family and his music.
