"teenage geezer," the long-awaited follow-up to Central Funktion''s 2006 debut, "Nightlife of the Gods," beautifully expands on the band''s wide array of influences, and gives listeners a microscopic understanding of their many sounds and talents.
Recorded at Chicken Hill Studios, just outside of Nashville, in the fall of 2007, "teenage geezer" features six key tracks excerpted from a project exploring the cycle of life. The EP was produced by engineer Mike Latterall and lead singer Corey Finnell.
"The entire project was written and recorded over a year ago in our practice space, in Kingston," says Finnell. "We had the luxury of time away from gigging to experiment and explore each song''s depth in a manner any artist would be lucky to do."
The tracks are especially personal to each of the band members, including drummer Andrew Nance, who adds, "We''ve always wanted to portray something that can be appreciated from a distance and can also be relatable for the listener. Our music describes human nature and the way life, in general, forms distances between people. However, it actually turns out to be both an individual and social bonding experience."
Bassist Jackson Deal continues, "With the new EP we tried to give our audience a sample of what the Funktion can bring to the table. I believe there''s something for everyone in this music. With these recordings, I think we have brought our sound to a new level. We have a better grasp on what our music is about. It has grown both conceptually and emotionally."
After losing a two members following the release of "Nightlife of the Gods," Central Funktion had to re-examine both its live sound and future projects. Horn player Mark Ellis explains, “This EP means more than I can show. I’ve lost my whole section. It’s just me now. I have overcome a lot of fears, but as a band member, I have tried to just take it all in stride. I have had to change everything I have written into one part, and then I had to make it all look easy. Each individual has pushed me in some form or fashion. They have enabled me to turn fear into fire.”
In January of ''08, the Funktion hired Joey Murray as lead guitarist, and have rekindled the energetic presence their live shows demand. With "teenage geezer," the band hopes to reach its broadest audience yet, and assures the best music is yet to come.
