BIO
May 2007

I was born and raised in Banff, the Rocky Mountain resort town in Alberta, where the Brewster family has resided for over 120 years. I started singing with my mom and two sisters on Rocky Mountain trail rides which were run by our family. Despite my upbringing, I didn’t pursue a career in music right away. Instead, I earned my Bachelor Degree in Physical Education in 1985 from the University of Alberta. I knew in my heart however, that I wanted to sing, so following Henry David Thoreau’s saying: “Go confidently in the directions of your dreams”, I did.

With the release of my third CD, “Large Bird Leaving” it certainly feels like I’m traveling in the direction of my dreams. The CD was produced by Winnipeg’s Murray Pulver; not only is he extremely talented, but the Western Canada Music Alliance voted Murray Musician of the Year in 2006. We recorded the tracks in Edmonton at Mike Lent’s little studio, with Mike engineering as well as playing bass. Rounding out our studio ensemble was Daniel Roy on percussion who has performed with Nathan, Madrigia and the Wyrd Sisters. The project then moved to Winnipeg where we were fortunate to have the talents of Richard Moody (the Bills) and the Dugas family, Norm, Sarah and Christian. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the cover art on the CD is a beautiful painting that hangs in my house called Large Bird Leaving by Canadian artist Shelia Norgate.

I need solitude to write and with an active 8 year old I don’t often get it, so I escape to a little B & B in Nanton, Alberta and write songs. After I had finished writing a song called “What Casanova Told Me”, I knew it was time to record a new record and “Large Bird Leaving” was born. My songs are about hope, family, love, the social condition and of course heartache; that’s a prerequisite for a songwriter.

I recently returned from an adventure in Iquitos, Peru where I had the privilege of performing on a 112 year old ship (Rio Amazonas) that cruised down the Amazon River. The trip was out of this world to say the least. One of the highlights was singing for children of the Pacaya Samira reserve in their clapboard, one room, school house; seeing their smiling faces reminded me why I love to sing.

Yes, it has been a few years since the release of my last CD. Have I been out of the music business? The answer is no…I’ve been busy, really! After the birth of my son, River, in 1998, we ventured to New Zealand where I toured with a local songwriter. I then had the wonderful experience of being a music supervisor for a documentary on Alberta cowgirls, called Pretty Ladies, Fast Horses. We have been lucky to have one of our songs on the television series, Dawson Creek and we are starting to have our songs recorded by other artists. Our new venture is the Yamnuska Mountain Music Series, a concert series that presents music in the Bow Valley.

I’m going to travel where this CD takes me; I hope to see you on the road.
