Details:
Emotionally honest, spirited, and musically innovative jazz-tinged rock and folk/roots from three women and three men who came of age in the 60''s and 70''s. Funky Stella is: Rob Rand (drums, live sound engineering, backing vocals, golden ear); Terry Morgan (percussion, backing vocals, energy influx); Tom Babbitt (guitars, keys, lead vocals, backing vocals, tenacious creative); Nancy Coleman (lead vocals, backing vocals, keys, old soul poet); Steve Chapman (bass, mascot, reality check); and JoAnn McAllister (backing vocals, color, motion & style). Songwriters Nancy Coleman and Tom Babbitt are true collaborators and life partners who bring depth of feeling and talent to the band''s very original songs. Tom, a theory and composition major in college, has been in and out of bands for 25 years, such as Baltimore''s "Arms Akimbo," Northampton, Mass''s "Beauty Group" (featuring Anne Watts and Curt Heavey from Baltimore''s "Boister") and Boston''s "Talking To Animals." He has studied with jazz greats "Oregon," Boston''s Randy Roos, and music theorist Roland Wiggins. Nancy is a powerful poet, songwriter and healer who''s been writing in a multitude of genres for 30 years. Rob launched into self-taught blues guitar in 1970 listening to John Lee Hooker, and played guitars/vocals/bass/pedal steel in countless blues/folk bands from 1972-1994. Rob tapped into deeper spiritual roots with ethnic drums/ecstatic chant/guitars in afro-cuban and ecstatic-dance events from 1995-2000. Rob''s divine sound compositions were commissioned in an exhibition "Sound of Spirit", Peabody-Essex Museum, 1999-2000. Rob has been playing drums, singing and creating studio quality sound in FunkyStella concerts. Steve Chapman, a guitarist, bass player and songwriter of 40 years has played with Boston''s "Circle Sky" and Portland''s "Fashion Jungle." Please support this wonderful band by purchasing the CD!
