Since first entering this world Grey Melcher has been turning concepts into realities both visually and sonically.
Having a visual artist as a father and a jazz singing mother, artistic expression came as second nature. Grey grew up with access to instruments such as a Grand Piano, kalimba, African Slit Drum, Casio Keyboard, Fisher Price Bell train, Guitars, drums and other less conventional things.
His first recording experimentation began at the age of five using a simple cassette tape recorder.
At age thirteen Grey was turned onto the bass guitar and started creating music with great enthusiasm. He was formally and informally taught by such musicians as Eric Von Essen (Jazz bassist extraordinaire) and eclectic musician Ethan Holtzman (Dengue Fever).
By 1995 using his mom’s old TEAC 4 track reel-to-reel machine Melcher had started to create multi-track recordings. Playing drums, bass, guitar, synthesizers, banjo, voices and other sounds Grey wrote, recorded and produced a large catalogue of quirky tunes.
In 2003 Melcher put together a digital recording studio and formed the five-piece group BOLTS AND CONVERSATION primarily as a vehicle to perform his new creations live.
He also served as a backing vocalist, bass and synthesizer player for the then newly formed power pop rock group JULIE until his departure from the group in early 2007.
Melcher currently writes, records and produces music with occasional live performances.
