Some Words on Hanimex Stand

Geography accounts for a lot. Hanimex Stand are a band centred around Bartle Frere in Far North Queensland. You might have heard of the mountain that the “town” is named after if you paid enough attention in primary school geography: Mount Bartle Frere is the highest mountain in the state of Queensland, Australia. The mountain is covered in rainforest. It is the rainiest place in Australia. While the rest of the nation is in drought, the mountain is under cloud. It is clouds that the members of Hanimex Stand are the first to acknowledge that they have their heads fairly and squarely planted in. From their regional Queensland base they wish to find an interested audience for their original garagey pop songs.

Growing up in various small pockets of tropical Queensland has been a formative process for the members of Hanimex Stand and this in turn has informed the philosophy of the band. From their geographically isolated homes, the discovery of independent “alternative” music during their adolescent years represented a revolution. A revolution in the sense that here was a music that celebrated difference – and difference was one thing that the soon-to-be-members-of-the-band were acutely aware of. They were different by virtue of living in anabranch (read small town) rather than mainstream Australia. And they were different within their towns in-so-much-as that they felt unrepresented by the musical schlock that beset local AM radio, high school discos and hotel juke boxes.

For the members of Hanimex Stand, independent music was also revolutionary because it licensed them to “do it yourself”. Musical proficiency was not to be an obstacle to forming a band, and song themes could be as diverse and divergent as can be. So with a few guitar chords garnered from the back of a Slim Dusty song book and armed with their anabranch world-view Hanimex Stand was formed. The band sets itself three goals when producing songs. The songs are to: 1) have a tune; 2) have meaning and 3) present well. Hanimex Stand believes that to achieve this trifecta pays the greatest dividends - even if they hitherto have only been squandered in the practice room on the hill (that is Bartle Frere) or in front of the handful of faithful that attend the band’s regular gigs in the nearby service centre of Cairns.

But quixotically, from their hilltop home, Hanimex Stand dream of mounting a larger offensive. In the best traditions of the Warholian (or Joy Divison/ New Order) “factory” they have independently set about commodifying their product. The “Winterlong Crush” EP recorded in the state capital of Brisbane in the latter half of last year under the tutelage of fellow provincial and long time friend Bryce Moorhead represents a good first try. In turn this has spawned two promotional film clips written, directed and filmed by the members of Hanimex Stand.

So Hanimex Stand, in the words of F. Scott Fitzgerald, “beat on, boats against the current”. They are a momentary aberration. A product of their backwater environment. You can be a part of this freak show while it lasts. We want you to. If you won’t come to the mountain we want to bring the mountain to you.
