FOLK: Folk-Rock, JAZZ: Jazz-Rock
Back in 1998 or so a mutual friend invited Henry Alton over to his place to jam with a couple of other friends including Michael Pedersen (vocals) and his brother Darren who was on bass that night. We kicked around some old rock standards and the sound was pretty decent from the get go. Michael sang some of these and Henry really liked his vocals. Minutes after Henry left he got a call from the guys still at the jam, about the possibility of playing together more seriously. Henry said that if Michael was doing any vocals, he would be into it for sure! They worked out arrangements of some of Michaels song ideas and started playing. They went through various configurations of the band and sound over a period of about 6 years, believe it or not! Back-up vocalists and drummers were "running through us like water". Overall though, it seemed they were seeking the right beat more than anything else and wanted a more grass roots sound, using acoustic guitar and cleaner electric rhythms and leads. An ad went into the Ottawa Musician (thanks all) and Rob Murray answered. A get together was set up and not more than 45 seconds into "Questions", one of the songs on Half Past Humans’ new CD, they realized that his beats belonged to this music. They’re into a 2nd year together now and are going to play some more in support of this new CD this summer.
