Details:
In Flight Radio created waves with their 2006 self-titled debut - building a dedicated Northeastern US fanbase, and receiving accolades from hometown magazines, including Time Out New York, The Deli Magazine, and Big Takeover. “The thing that we always hear is we’ve got that big British rock sound, but the female vocal changes it up for everybody,” explains the group’s Brooklyn-born singer and guitarist, Peira. “I definitely think that helps us stand out. Plus, there aren’t any divas in this band – no rock stars. There’s not a single perfectly messy, shaggy hairdo on stage when we play.” The band’s members are undeniably influenced by modern American indie rock, but have an equal fondness for the atmospheric guitar work of British bands such as The Doves and Radiohead.

While there’s no argument that the band’s debut was promising and allowed the then trio to make a splash and build a name for themselves on the east coast, the group grew exponentially once the cycle of promoting and touring behind the self-titled debut ceased. “With our debut, we had a different line-up, basically a different band all together,” explains Peira. “Devin [Krug] and I, the bass player, have always played together but the last incarnation of the band was as a trio. We added another guitar player [Peru native Saric], and Mike Dawson took over as our drummer.” With the internal restructuring, Peira’s knack for writing sweeping and memorable songs was supported by a more confident and weighty group of musicians. “This group of people has created a new energy, and the music is coming out so much better. I’m so proud of the music on The Sound Inside, and much more like this expresses who I am, and who we all are musically.”

In September 2007, the quartet entered the studio, and as the songs took shape, the band found their engineer - Brian Fulk (Rufus and Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thompson) at Brooklyn’s Monkey Boy Studios proved to be a perfect fit. With the pieces all in place, The Sound Inside (April 15, Last Broadcast Records) was completed by mid-December. “My favorite songs are always the ones that are closest to me emotionally, and on this album I feel that way about ''Yelling Up to the Sky.'' It’s not necessarily the catchiest or most accessible song, but I’m really proud of that one. ‘Red Flags,’ on the other hand, is one of those songs that people always comment on. It has a Pixies-esque feel of soft verses and big rocker choruses.”

As for what’s in store for In Flight Radio upon the release of The Sound Inside, the group plans on racking up the road miles, and solidifying the new line-up even further. “We tend to rock it out a lot more live. We just want to play as much as possible, and get heard as much as possible – that’s the biggest challenge for an indie band. And just have fun too – enjoy it. When you’re 90, you want to say you had fun.”

In Flight Radio has arrived at a place where they feel they can stay true to their indie-rock roots, while also touching on the British rock anthems and shoegazing textures that they grew up listening to. It''s a sound that can be felt as well as heard. It truly is The Sound Inside.
