Gabriel James is a Minneapolis singer-songwriter backed by a gifted group of funk jazz musicians. With the December 2004 release of "in the hands of fools" (Gabriel''s second full-length studio album), Gabriel James and Grass Root Records are fast becoming a mainstay in one of our nation''s biggest indie songwriter secrets: The thriving Minneapolis music scene.
Born to a talented songwriter for a father, Gabriel was raised around the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, Three Dog Night, and Rickie Lee Jones, and has always been close to the creative process. After teaching himself guitar theory at 14, early projects cast him strumming Nirvana tunes, singing Tool and Filter cover songs, and drumming for an instrumental improv band.
Gabriel got his first taste for what would later become a driven singer-songwriter during his Freshman year of college. Encouraged by a Music professor to participate in a Spring festival, he threw together a few original songs and a group of hand-picked musicians from former projects to perform as "Toll Booth Willie, and the Bluegrass Plucking Mo Fo''s." Five years, two albums, and plethora of shows later, Gabriel emerges as a songwriter with a well-honed style and a knack for intense performance.
"In the hands of fools" offers what much of the music industry seems to be missing: a songwriter producing what he''s passionate about without consequence.
