Manifest Density is an album about life, its patterns, transitions and reflections. As much as this album is a Lucky Dog effort, most of the songs come from a place in my (Brad Curtis) childhood; on a farm in Iowa with family and friends… Where I grew to love the smell of the rich, fertile land and the honest, good natured people I met across the mostly German, Czech, French and Polish towns that collectively make up Middle America. This album is in honor of those times and those hard working people.
We also explore children, growing up, relationships and even the ultimate transition, but always find time to have a little fun along the way… Just like life!
1. Manifest Density
I watched my grandfather and many like him struggle over “The American Dream” in the 1970’s, give up the family farm, lose a grandson to Viet Nam and even buy a foreign car! It was heartbreaking for him to watch America lose its way after what the previous generations had done to build her up, but he never lost his faith in the American spirit.
2. Another Song (Stella)
A modern lullaby for baby Stella and the stars above.
3. Seven Year old Son
Inspired by a Neil Young song, my son and I drive the back-roads to a favorite camping spot on a perfect Sonoma night … I actually had one of those rare, peaceful moments, when everything in life seemed to connect and fit according to “the plan”.
4. Maybe
This is a song about the most solid things in life; The Sun, Tide, Sky… Love. You think these things will never change, but they always do. MTV''s Lara Johnston helps out on vocals on this one.
5. Gotta Broken Heart
Pure punk country! Remember when you were a kid and having a broken heart was sorta fun?
6. Friday Morning
One day it’s all good, the next day another guy is on the doorstep with all his stuff. A’int love grand!
7. Mi Michelle
A boy falls for a woman of questionable character while on a tumultuous Spring break trip to Mexico…Pure fiction.
8. Compass Rose
This song is about getting older and realizing where one’s direction in life comes from. My grandmother, Clarice Shonka took care of me during my summers on the farm in Pocahontas, Iowa and wintered with us in California. She was the best!
