Nou is an Los Angeles-based alt-rock quartet comprised of Derek de Lang (vocals/guitars), Andrew Sabatine (bass), Daniel Silver (touring guitarist), and Christian Welch (drums). The project was originally started as a solo project in 2006 by de Lang after a relatively amicable split from another band. Soon, he began looking through old song demos and lyrics for inspiration for new material. After writing for over six months, he found that he had some great songs, and wanted to make a record without the traditional “band” arrangement, taking a hint from Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carabba and Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor.
But after failing to finish the record on his own, de Lang then began to form a live band, recruiting some former schoolmates and friends he had played with before. After months of rehearsing and working on material, Nou made their live debut in May 2007. After more gigs, summer holidays, and some lineup changes, Nou began pre-production on their debut EP that fall and recorded it in early 2008.
“Stateless” is a collection of songs that are “laidback and atmospheric”, “simplistic yet intricate”, “lovely”, “refreshing”, “totally in-between genres”, and “innovative”. The chemistry found between the band is unique yet radio-friendly. “All the songs are really about trying to get somewhere or closer to someone, with lots of bittersweet in-between, mixed feelings,” says de Lang. “The point of view on this record is that of someone that’s emotionally stateless and just overwhelmed yet surprised and positive about the things and people that come your way.”
“Stateless” is currently scheduled for release in the spring of 2008.
