Penelope Brain''s third record, ''Unplug My Metal Heart,'' marks a radical change of direction by the experimental Space Rocker.
Abandoning his usual heavily-layered sound of rock instruments, atmospheric textures and sci-fi effects, here Brain’s songs are accompanied by nothing more than acoustic guitars, pianos and an occasional organ.
The album was recorded over a period of two years in various bedrooms in Sweden, Germany and Australia. Although a proudly DIY, home-made effort, this acoustic record features Brain’s clearest and most accessible recordings to date.
Although Brain has for the first time forsaken his distinctive otherworldly sound, the subject matter of his songs has not changed. Subtitled “a collection of homespun tales about broken robots, captains lost at sea and disasters in outer space,” this album sees Brain further exploring his usual melancholic themes of loneliness, despair and ruin in outer space or in the future.
Indeed, the sparse and simple acoustic arrangements of these songs give Brain’s songs a more arresting depth of emotion and a more pronounced sadness than ever before.
With a sound reminiscent of The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and The Cure, and a voice closely resembling REM’s Michael Stipe, Penelope Brain’s first acoustic record is his most intense and most powerful yet.
Also of note is that this release is an experiment in distribution. It is being released in digital-only format. There will be no physical CD as such, and can only be obtained online in mp3 or other digital formats. This method enables the album to be sold at an extremely low price. As the recordings were made at home for very little cost, and because there is also no cost involved in manufacturing physical copies of the music, the selling price of the music has been made as low as possible. We believe this concept will be the way of the future, as it benefits both the listener and the musician, especially the independent musician.
