I was born in Sheffield, England- I started playing folk clubs in uostairs pub rooms when I was 15-the evening would always end with “Wild Mountain Thyme’-which is still a heartfelt tune for me(and my faves Van Morrison and The Byrds) Like a million other hopeful tunesmiths I picked up a
guitar because of one person Bob https://www.tradebit.com high school art teacher loaned me scratchy mono versions of Highway 61 Revisited, John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline, which started my real education. I played them over and over, wanting to understand the complete utter profundity and strangeness
of this music from another land.
Skipping forward through art school (and art school bands) I eventually found myself in a group(The Jack Rubies) that unlocked the magical door, and I signed a publishing deal with Warner https://www.tradebit.com even got to played the famed Marquee Club before it was tragically knocked down. I’ll always
remember the dusty sixties black and red decor and the remnants of the original canvas marquee clingingto the ceiling, the place reverberating with the ghosts of all that great music.
TVT, a NYC label- signed the Jack Rubies and is if by some magical yearning I was in the land of my inspirations, hanging out on positively 4th st and dreaming about the gone folk https://www.tradebit.comn like Mr Kerouac we went on the road-after the Stone Pony gig in Asbury Park I stood on the
boardwalk and dreamed about California and two months later I was looking at the Pacific standingon Ventura’s dirty sun-baked beach at twilight-in between were Disneyfied skies-riding the ghostly
street cars of New Orleans, gliding over uncut weeds-playing Tipitinas and staying awake for three days straight -crossing Texas endlessly-watching god-like lightning streak the huge New Mexico skyand feeling the trasnscendental breeze clear the mist over San Francisco-real but not real-like a drug
After I left the US and the Rubies- I wrote more songs about my american dream, and after twists and turnscame back to NYC solo- then put together a band called Milagro Saints, eventually signing a deal withMood Food a small NC label based in Raleigh, that released Whiskeytown’s first CD.
After that I reached other destinations when I played the Woody Guthrie Folk festival in Woody’shometown of Okemah-joining Arlo and all the other performers singing ”This Land is Your Land”
