Raised on the streets of Bed-Stuy, Sekou Metephyz, born Sekou Jenkins on (what ever his birthday is), used his triumphs and trials to navigate through the streets of Brooklyn, finding an outlet through lyric and metaphor. Ultimately, creativity provided the platform for expression and passion to define his own success, at any cost.
The second of three boys, growing-up was a series of pains. Fighting wasn''t an option—but a way of life. The hallways of Boys & Girls High School provided Sekou with the fundamentals of street life and hustle. But he had broader, more imaginative dreams, far beyond the destitute fate of his high school hallways and the dismal confines of the hood. Seeking more, Sekou searched for other outlets, incorporating conscious into his style—looking to elevate from hopelessness and despair—even if only in music.
Taking a job as a lifeguard at the local YMCA, a fatal accident placed him at odds again, leaving Sakou to choose between life and death (not really sure what happened in this accident—not really sure why this was important…I might take it out—who really cares?? And why should they?. In 2002, his son was taken away at the mere age of one—causing a huge set back in his career. Feeling powerless, he combined madness and frustration into a unique melodic flow, rivaling artist such as Common and Nassir Jones. Sekou used this tragedy to take his self-expression to new levels, destine to return hip-hop to its conscientious roots.
Determined to succeed, for success means everything—the return of his son, the fulfillment of purpose—Sekou Metaphyz remains on target, actualizing his dreams with his debut album, High Gravity. Surrounded by more infamous heroines than inspirations, Sekou Metaphyz is a reminder to so many who walk his road that success is possible.
