The Raw Life Testimony of Robert Punch Basden

Born in 1963 in Miami, Florida, Robert Punch Basden has been singing since he was a child. Robert grew up as a part of a strong Christian family. They attended church regularly together and Robert was in the choir. Even as child he had a foundation as a Christian and also a relationship with God. Robert was also an exceptional athlete, and was offered a number of football scholarships. He turned these down, however, to pursue his true passion; singing. At nineteen, he moved to California’s Bay Area to follow his dream of becoming a major recording artist. Known as PUNCH in the music industry, his singing and songwriting abilities were so dynamic he soon became a regular opening act for stars such as MC Lyte, Tony Toni Tone, R Kelly, High 5 and Queen Latifah. He was even recognized by Billboard Magazine in 1998 as one of the Music Industry’s up and comers.

Punch found himself pulled into the party scene that surrounds the entertainment industry. At first, he spent nights simply drinking and pursuing women. Soon he began to experiment with cocaine. Shortly after, he substituted crystal meth for cocaine. What began as a purely social pursuit soon took over his life.

Romans 8:37-39 “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

“Methamphetamine deceived me and destroyed my career. I ended up losing my home, my family and most importantly, my dignity.”

A Life Filled with Darkness

Through all the limelight, money and women, I fell into a serious drug addiction and was lost in it for many years. In early 1998 I first substituted methamphetamine for cocaine. This was when my problems really began: Methamphetamine deceived me and destroyed my career. I ended up losing my home, my family, and most importantly my dignity. Trying to escape the pain this caused, I ran towards drugs and deeper into addiction. In the later part of 1998, I became homeless. I lived out of my truck, unable to go even a few days without methamphetamine. I ignored my responsibilities: my family, my daughter Elana and myself. I needed to get high, and that is what I lived for.

In December 1999, I found myself in a life-altering situation. I was with a girl I barely knew in Oakland and we had been up for five days. We were at a gas station when we got into a loud argument. Two men that I didn’t know witnessed the altercation and followed our car with theirs. They pulled in front of us, blocking us with their car. They got out of the car, and one of the men pointed a gun to my head and told the girl to get out. It was at that moment I took a good look at my life and what I was doing.

This is when I first cried out to God for help. Not knowing how to leave the life I was leading, I began by entering a detox program in Concord, CA. I stayed in the program for about three months. During this detox, I took a real good look at myself and who I was. I knew I had a purpose and something to live for.

Isiah 43:1-2 “But no thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not; for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by the name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; when though walkest through the fire, though shall not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”

In March of 2000, I entered into Salvation Army Rehab in San Jose, CA. During this time, I resolved that my life would now be about spreading the word of God through my music. I wrote the first three songs of this album in Salvation Army. After graduating the six month Salvation Army program, I managed to stay clean for another fifteen months. I relapsed again in the summer of 2001.

2 Chronicles 7:14 “If my people, which are called by my name shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from the heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

A few months later, I entered the City Team Ministries in San Jose Ca. I finished the first half of this album while I was there. I thought I was finally free from my addiction.

In June 2002 I had a devastating relapse and found myself in jail for the first time in my adult life. I was thirty nine years old. I was ordered to complete a drug diversion program called proposition 36. I lost all hope.

Psalm 40:1-2 “I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings

For the next four years my addiction came back with a vengeance. I was in and out of jail for misdemeanors of Under the Influence, Possession of a Controlled Substance and Resisting Arrest. Though I was still battling my sickness, God constantly spoke to me while I was jail. I finished this album during this time, one of the darkest of my life.

Isiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

God had a huge impact in my life at my lowest points, and I began to preach his word to fellow inmates while I was locked up and incarcerated. By 2007, I was ready to leave my addiction for good, this is when I met Pastor Johnny Lapenias at the New Creation Covenant Ministries in San Jose, Ca. This is where I graduated from Proposition 36 in January 2008. I thank New Creation Covenant Ministries for saving my life and allowing me to fulfill the will of God. I am currently the praise and worship leader and minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the Men’s Home. It’s been a long journey, but I credit my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for my current success. He promised me that He would never leave me nor forsake me for He is the one who overcame the world and those who believe in him shall also overcome the world.

“Into the Light”

I now know that the path I chose to follow early in my career was not the one God has chosen for me. Though I went through all the ups and downs I have finally made it through the darkness and into the light. Everything that I have gone through has made me the person I am today. God has a called on me to use my gift for music to spread his word. Now, my passion is to enlighten the world through my music with the real life testimonies of the trials we all go through. I will forever continue to bring the word of God through my music.
