From budding romances to tearful goodbyes, the Tango Café is the theatre of all passions. Bandonion and violins meet in a decor that flirts with the nostalgia of turn-of-the-century coffee houses.

Denis Plante & Noémi Racine Gaudreault are well known for their many performances as soloists with Quartango, the prize-winning Canadian quartet. Together they have recorded two Cds, Noémi leading the Racines String Quartet & Denis playing the bandonion, one of the famous concertinas of the AA series, a key component of authentic Argentinean tango. They have developed an original repertoire of impressionist tango featuring bandonion & strings, bringing tango to a new level of expressivity and subtlety.

Denis Plante - Bandonion

At the turn of 19th century, it was a common practice in Buenos Aires to give tangueros a nickname: el Pibe (The young), el Flaco (The skinny), el Polaco (The Polish), el Pichuco (the dark skinned). If Denis Plante had lived at that time, they would have called him el Norteño (The northerner). Indeed Denis Plante was born far away from Buenos Aires. He was born in Montreal, were he grew up surrounded by the collection of medieval instruments of his parents. Since his childhood, he accompanied them on their tour of America and Europe, singing, playing recorder, lute or percussions. After a formation in classical oboe, he studied jazz harmony at the Concordia University. At the end of his studies, seduced by Tango, he formed a quartet with which he recorded his first compositions for bandonion. Soon he was invited to join Quartango, the award winning tango ensemble in Canada. He toured extensively in Canada and abroad, recorded several album and played with various symphonic orchestras, presenting to a classical audience a panorama of Argentine Tango. In 2004, Denis Plante presented a first solo album “Cantos de bandoneón” followed by “Café Tango” on which his compositions for bandonion and string quartet explore various aspects of contemporary tango.
