MP3 Soulless Dogs - Loose Cannonry

A tight rhythm section, jazz-derived harmonies, and unusual, often intellectual lyrics to create music the likes of which has seldom been heard before.

8 MP3 Songs
JAZZ: Jazz-Funk, BLUES: Funky Blues

Details:
Ben Shelton added George Dyer as a friend on Facebook two weeks before the start of classes at Duke, based on a common love of blues and funk. After their first night at Duke, during a typically misguided meet-your-peers session hosted by the university they would both soon come to love and hate, they retired to George’s hamster-cage dorm room to play some of the best blues heard since Robert Johnson’s unfortunate demise. Two weeks later, bassist Spike Brehm heard the two playing in the Blackwell commons room and, sensing the musical magic, dragged bass and amplifier halfway across campus to join in. Thus began the Soulless Dogs, a juggernaut of a band that would swiftly conquer the other three bands in the Duke music scene.

By their junior year, the band was ready to cut their first record. After a summer playing with St. Louis blues legend Bennie Smith, a stint in the Duke jazz ensemble backing musicians like David “Fathead” Newman and Joey DeFrancesco, and a three-month obsession with John Coltrane and Allan Holdsworth culminating in a switch from standard tuning to all-fourths, Ben’s guitar playing had drastically improved. In addition, his vocal and keyboard chops had developed to the point where they were no longer an embarrassment. After careful study of Freddie King and Roy Buchanan, George’s guitar chops had evolved to the point where Ben was content to play keys and sing, knowing that George could burn up the stage as well as anyone, and play great rhythm as well. Spike’s bass playing had matured, focusing on the groove while dancing through the chord changes. Finally, drummer Rob DiMauro had joined the band, bringing with him a deep knowledge of drumming history, an incredible feel for time and groove, and infallible ears.

This record, Loose Cannonry, is the culmination of our last three years of musical madness. Take a listen. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.

The songs on the record are:

Mister Whiskey – Alcohol is fun, until he drinks it.

Philosopher King – Can’t do anything? Then write about nothing.

Richard Feynman – American music is saturated with the idea of the outlaw. Warren Zevon had his Jesse James. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker had their Owsley. We have our Richard Feynman.

Ann Coulter’s Born Again – Dedicated Dead-head becomes compassionate conservative?

Loose Cannon – CS student in Beijing witnesses Tiananmen Square, secure in the knowledge that he could never do such a thing. Then he ends up working to censor the Internet with the Great Firewall. Is this guy conflicted or what?

I Know Who You Are – Puritanical collegiate leaves his comfort zone in search of the mythical drunken hookup

Untitled Ballad – Smart girl hides behind ditzy personality. Smart guy sees past it. Awkwardness ensues.

Stand Up – It’s sad when you’re middle-aged and you still haven’t grown up.
