Almost at the summit now. Almost too much has happened, and we almost had to quit. Then there was the debt and the tumour and the lack of shared visions.
Still, the burning bush has now set fire to the house next door and the people inside are giving up on the television to come out and see what''s going on. Round and round and round we go, just to tell a tale. A tall tale, but surely one worth telling.
It would be nice, now that we''re a little older and wiser, to say that we could impart great philosophical insight, to leave everyone ready to eschew worldly possessions and unkind thought in favour of all that is good....
...But this isn''t 1967, if 1967 ever happened. This is self-obsessed, debt-ridden, obese, directionless, sweat-patch and cellulite spotting, post-Thatcher, New Labour, King Size Mars Bar, I''m A Celebrity So Shoot Me, shallow, empty Britain 2005, and aren''t we welcome to it?
We can''t offer anything much, except some tunes to put a smile on your face and a tear in your eye, and perhaps a feeling that some people, somewhere actually might.

Songs For Your Neighbour is the debut album from Geist. Written by Dominic Hudson & John McDevitt, produced by Henry Sand and recorded at Cattleprod Studios in 2002/3.

''With chunky guitars, a violin and a mandolin on board, Geist''s sound is as powerful as it is distinctive. This 41 minute long album is, quite simply, terrific. Lovers of the late, great Kirsty McColl, The Wonderstuff, Dylan, Neil Young, even The Pogues, Morrissey, The Dandy Warhols and The Beatles will find plenty to enjoy here, with not a filler track in sight. Irresistible opener That Was Then sets a folk pop tone with its jaunty pace, upfront fiddling and well-crafted structure. With fine mandolin flourishes, crunchy guitars, it must go down a storm live. The same goes for closing track Memory Lane, which packs a Stax-style rhythm, poppy guitars, and powerful vocals. In between are songs which showcase the band''s maturity and talent, peaking with the wonderfully haunting and sombre For You; dreamy and mellow organ-backed Milk & Two Sugars; and the bustling big folk-come-rockabilly sounding Our Wonderful Joe''.

Sometimes little gems drop onto the VBM mat, which make the job worthwhile. One such gem is ''Songs For Your Neighbour''... There are few bands or individuals making music where the central consideration isn''t either commercial or self-satisfying. There''s a touch of Tom McCrae and a smattering of Dylanesque musical- landscaping, but overall it''s impossible not to recognise Geist as living in a very wonderful world of their own. We here, @ VBM, will be watching Geist''s future with a wondering eye... Wondering why they''ve yet to leave Travis, Coldplay and all the other seeming pretenders well and truly in their wake... Excellent stuff!
