To hear a debut that actually feels as good as it sounds is a welcome rarity these day, but pianist and singer-songwriter Bill Purdy’s independently-released 5-song EP “MOVE MY WAY” hits both marks easily, with an irresistible blend of pop, rock, and blue-eyed soul music.
Sitting alongside modern troubadors like Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Ray LaMontagne, John Mayer, and now, Brett Dennen, Purdy’s piano-based songs are at once fresh, classic, funky and familiar.
After paying dues on piano and organ in the Los Angeles blues, reggae, and, most recently, latin music scenes, with "MOVE MY WAY" Purdy''s vocals and songwriting have made to move to center stage. But luckily, the fat grooves learned as a sideman still percolate throughout the record, and the EP features a cast of Purdy’s friends and family, including Jeff Roffredo (Tiger Army, The Aggrolites), Wyzard (Mother’s Finest, Stevie Nicks) Michael Jerome (Richard Thompson, John Cale, Tom Freund) Gerald Couchman (Rita Marley, Mongoose), and introduces Nashville country-soul specialist John Purdy, Bill’s kid brother.
