Details:
MarMelodian is led by singer/songwriter Martha Maria, who describes her life as "full circle." After graduating high school and going off to see the world, she now lives in the shadow of the same mountains where she grew up, in the foothillls of East Tennessee. Love and marriage brought her full circle as well. After adventuring far afield, she reconnected with her first love and married her high school sweetheart. Married for nineteen years, they live with their two teen-aged sons in the same house in the woods where her husband grew up.

Martha Maria began playing the piano by ear at age four and singing and playing the mountain dulcimer at age eleven. She now plays many musical instruments, including the fiddle, hammered dulcimer, hurdy gurdy and all sorts of keyboards. She writes songs and instrumental music in many styles.

How "Free Tibet" came to be written Martha Maria bought a treasure trove old National Geographic at a flea market, many of them from the 1950''s and 60''s. One of them had an article about Tibet and the then much younger, exiled Dalai Lama. "I was reading it in bed one morning when the lyrics started coming to me....I grabbed pen and paper and wet to my keyboard. Within twenty minutes, I had a song, ''Free Tibet''". It was in reading the old National Geographic she learned of the Tibetan statues known as ''the Lords of Four Directions'' and that the title ''Dalai Lama'' means ''the Ocean of all Wisdom.'' She recorded the song in Nashville, Tennessee. "I''m lucky to live close to some of the best studio musicians in the whole world--I''m so proud to have these fabulous musicians playing on my record!"

"The highest goal of all art is to be a force for good," she says. "That''s what I want for this song....for it to call attention to what is going on in Tibet and help bring real change."
