2. Jerusalem Ridge
Bill Monroe, Bill Monroe Music, BMI
Bill Monroe wrote this song about his back yard over near Rosine, Ky., and it’s one of our favorites. Cathy, originally from Indiana and now a science teacher in Owensboro, is featured on fiddle. Joel—aka “the bearded Persimmon Sister”—who grew up in a family band in Fordsville, Ky. and has won about every fiddle & mandolin contest in these parts, is featured on mandolin. Vic Jordan reprises his former role as a Blue Grass Boy on the tasty banjo.
3. Rainbow River

Thanks to John Dillon, of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils, for writing this song—and to all the Dares for making bluegrass vocal harmony and the mouth bow cool on pop radio in the ‘70s! This song is for Stephanie Rogier (who does great “fish lips”) and for anybody who wishes they were going fishing with Andy & Opie when they hear the whistled theme song on Andy Griffith Show re-runs.

This is a song Nancy wrote when she was in college, 300 miles from home and missing the Missouri Ozarks. We’ll do it for our fellow bird watchers and paddlers out there in canoes and kayaks. Nancy, who has served as Special Projects Director for the International Bluegrass Music Assoc. since 1994, also grew up in a family band and has written about music since the early ‘80s. She was the recipient of the Charles Lamb Excellence in Country Music Journalism Award in 2006.
5. El Cumbanchero

Joel really struts his stuff on this hot instrumental classic from the repertoire of Jim & Jesse, and Vic (also a former member of Jim & Jesse’s Virginia Boys), hangs in there with Anita on the powerhouse rhythm guitar.
6. Blue Trail of Sorrow

Anita—Joel’s only slightly older but much wiser sister who works as a supervisor and nurse for the county health department—has one of those God-given, pure mountain bluegrass voices. We show her off here on one of our favorites from Alison Krauss.

We’ll send this one out to Nancy’s daughter, Erin Faith Erdos—also an occasional Persimmonette with the band (vocals & bluegrass flute). Her dad wrote this song a long time ago for his best friend, and Nancy & Erin like to keep it sung.

The Persimmon Sisters play a lot of fiddle tunes, and this is one of our favorite twin numbers featuring Joel (first lead) and Cathy (second). Thanks to all the amazing fiddlers who have influenced and inspired us over the years—starting with Cathy’s favorite, Kenny Baker!

Nancy wrote this song as a birthday present for her father, the late Marvin Cardwell of Springfield, Mo., who led a country band in the ‘60s and headed up the family band in the ‘70s-80s. It’s about their relatives who came over from England and settled in Tazewell, Tenn. several generations ago. We’ll do this one for all members of the Cardwell Family Band, past and future.

Here’s another toe-tapper featuring Cathy on the fiddle, Joel on the mandolin, Vic on the five, Anita on the flattop and Nancy on bass. As our friends, the Dillards used to say, you can dance “’til your socks are hot and ravely” on this one!
