Sherri’s love for music began at the age of four when she sang her first solo (“Away in a Manger”) in a church Christmas program. She began playing violin at the age of eight but much to the chagrin of her parents and teacher, found a greater love for the guitar by the time she was thirteen. It was at that time her songwriting began.
While residing in the Chicago area, Sherri became interested in different genres (folk, blues, jazz, bluegrass, and country-rock). Her own style of singing and song-writing began to emerge with the influence of such artists as Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Gordon Lightfoot, Bonnie Koloc, …(the list goes on). While in college, she sang and played guitar with a couple gospel groups, but soon ventured out and worked professionally for several years as lead vocalist in bands of various genres. She eventually reached a point of burnout and made the decision to put her music aside completely and just enjoy being a wife and mother for a while. It wasn’t until she noticed the God-given musical talent in her children that she became interested in singing and playing guitar again. Her songwriting resumed, only this time it was committed to the Lord. It was the turning point in her life.
Sherri is presently very active in the music ministry of her church (choir, worship group, a women’s vocal group, and solo work). She is also a member of a string band and does some solo work outside her church, ministering to those in retirement homes and healthcare centers, area churches, and a women’s prison. Her debut album “Basking In Freedom” reached completion after being in the works for about three years (with much help from Tom Hilker, the worship pastor at her church). Though it took awhile, she considers the project a valuable learning experience and a wonderful spiritual journey. It taught her to trust in the Lord as never before, and to wait on Him and His perfect timing. In sharing this collection with you, it is her desire that it be pleasing to her Lord and Savior, and that He receive the glory He so deserves.
ABOUT THE ALBUM
The songs recorded on this CD were inspired through scripture, prayer, and real life experiences. They are an expression of how God has revealed Himself to me and the transformation that has taken place in my life because of Jesus. Since early childhood God has given me the freedom to make choices, and whether my choices were right or wrong, He used every opportunity to try to draw me closer to Him. In many circumstances I found myself turning to others before turning to God. I did not realize how superficial my faith was, so it was difficult for me to understand what it really meant to depend upon Him and His perfect will for my life. At times I allowed doubt and fear to cloud my faith, especially when God did not answer prayer according to my desires. In reality, He had answered my prayers, not according to my will, but according to His perfect will, which protected me from the very things that would have held me in bondage for years to come. As God pursued me further, I learned to depend on Him and trust in Him as my Father. He used my life’s circumstances to draw me into the relationship He longed for. He took my tears of joy and sorrow and used them to teach me how to trust in Him completely and unconditionally.
My prayer is that this collection of songs will be encouraging and uplifting to those in all walks of life.
It is God’s desire that we come to Him with childlike faith and bask in the warmth of His love, mercy, and grace; in His discipline, forgiveness, and healing; in His wisdom, power, and strength; in His peace and joy; and in His holiness and glory. To experience this is … “Basking In Freedom”.
