LATIN: Tango, WORLD: South American

Details:
The Tango was born more than 100 years ago in Buenos Aires in the impoverished neighborhoods of newly arrived immigrant population. Within the merging, and clashing of clutures the embrace of tango became the bridge across which the human spririt could travel. Influenced by the percussive rhuthms of Candombe, tapered by the Cuban habanera and expanded in melody by European instrumentation, Tango evolved as the new language of the underworld. It enabled people to cross the economic and socail boundaries of their divided society.

He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in Russia, Portugal, Spain, Hawaii and California. Over the course of 20 years, Enrique Coria has played on approximately 400 different recordings with popular groups from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Bolivia. "My father gave me a Spanish guitar when I was 2 years old and I went crazy," recalls Enrique Coria. "I was always thinking about the guitar. Always." He would practice each day for hours. When unable to get guitar strings, he would use fishing lines instead. He taught a friend to play guitar so he could make music with someone else. At 15, he left his family and moved to the city of Cordoba to pursue a career as a guitarist. It was there that Enrique began performing contemporary Argentinean folk music with different bands in clubs and festivals in Cordoba and Buenos Aires. Enrique possesses the trait of musicians who aren''t afraid of immersing themselves in music of other cultures. He can shift effortlessly from classical to popular. Currently, Enrique tours with David Grisman. This evening we will experience him interpreting primarily the music from his native Argentina.
