My name is Grandon Gray. I am a singer/songwriter,and a native of Orrington, Maine. I have written and recorded a song inspired by the MS Challenge Walk, and am currently engaged with world famous percussionist Jim Brock recording my first album. Let me share with you the background on how Take A Step, came to be.
My wife was participating in the Charlotte event. I thought I could show my support to her and the rest of the walkers by going to the candlelight vigil and performing an inspirational song. The night before the vigil I was practicing a song called Superman by Five for Fighting. It had become an unofficial anthem for relief workers after the 9/11 tragedy. I was thinking about my wife walking 20 miles earlier that day, and the 16 miles she''d walk the next day. I thought about why she was doing it, and about the people she was selflessly struggling to help. And I thought about those folks fighting MS that were walking by her side...about how difficult the Challenge Walk must be for them, and about the enduring challenges they face every day.
Who knows what brings thoughts and music together? But whatever does-well it did. I began to piece together this song, Take A Step. I just played and wrote and played and wrote ...I opened myself up emotionally and this mingling of words and music poured out.
The afternoon prior to the vigil, I printed out the lyrics, brought them to the vigil, and handed them to my wife as I walked up to the microphone. Take A Step is my Love Note to her.
Writing this song, meeting the incredible walkers and volunteers and staff, listening to their stories of inspiration, and performing this for them was truly one of the most moving, most meaningful, and most wonderful experiences of my life. The emotional reaction and connection was very strong and humbling, frankly.
I hope the song and the story behind it encourages you on your journey. If Take A Step helps lift your spirits even just a bit during those times when things seem particularly difficult, I''ll be thankful.
