Details:
Andrew''s favorite story to tell is of his first guitar – that is, his first real guitar after the JC Penney special that he learned to play on. It was a $100 Applause—a lower-end guitar made by Ovation in the late 70''s with an aluminum neck and fiberglass back. A good guitar—nice sound, easy to play, and indestructible. Or so he thought until he picked up its case from the baggage carousel in Guatemala City and the bag sagged at both ends. He should have known better, of course, than to send it through in a gig bag. But there it was, a guitar broken beyond repair that he couldn''t bear to just throw away, but that was of no use to anyone. Or so he thought.

That guitar ended up being dispersed across the Guatemalan countryside like an offering of thanks for the incredible experience that he carried home from that country. The tuning gears, the bridge and the strings were taken by a local guitarist to add to and improve his own guitar. The dark-brown-sunburst top was taken by someone to use in embellishing some woodwork. And the fiberglass and aluminum neck were accepted by a store owner in a remote town – no doubt converted into some unimaginable yet useful purpose.

Andrew now plays a 20 year old Taylor 810 with a beautiful tone which provides the instrumental cornerstone of his first album Out Into the Dance. But the allegory of that broken guitar—of loss and hardship sowing the seeds of grace—echoes through the lyrics and the music on this album, just as it has through Andrew''s own life. You''ll find it in the lyric "what started out as gold has turned to dust, yet the dust shines bright as gold" from the song Mary Stuart, inspired by the tragic yet triumphant life of Mary Queen of Scots. In the song Mystery, that tells of lovers becoming "two strong trees, our branches twined in a tapestry" after emerging from being in love. In the plea to Gaia, "oh Mother may you swallow me whole, let me be the seed from which new life is sown" found in the song Swallow Me Whole. And even in the poignant yet beautiful instrumental Unspoken Journey. Yet Out Into the Dance has its lighter moments as well. Such as the playful Turning, which features a magical mandolin track by Bill Edwards (of the band Way Out West). And the soaring instrumental Teewinot Sunrise.

Andrew has been singing, playing guitar, and writing songs since his brother taught him his first chords at the age of 15. He started out learning the songs of John Denver, Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan. But his more enduring influences have been Dan Fogelberg, Bruce Cockburn and, more recently, Richard Shindell. He has always enjoyed performing since his first time on stage at his high school''s folk show – where he received a standing ovation (as did most of the other performers that evening). Andrew has been a regular at local coffee houses wherever he has lived, including the CSU Long Beach Coffee House, Drowsy Maggie''s in San Diego and The Blue Mango in Davis, CA. After many years of focusing on career, marriage, and his first child, Andrew has picked up his guitar again and is ready to share his original music and unique perspective through his new album Out Into the Dance, and through live performances ... with whoever would like to listen.
