These here songs took a wee while to get finished, what with me playing all the instruments (''cept the drums) and now they''re all dressed and ready for the world. But they''re still my babies. So be good to them.

Track one - Sting-type reggae start which quickly moves to African-style 6/8 rhythm. Jazzy with lots of harmonies and silly lyrics. All with a touch of mandolin. Track 2 - Caribbean thing with bouzouki and great sounding drums. Vocals in funky section learnt at the knee of Phil Lynott (Bless ''im). Lusty and sweet. Great fun. Track 3 - Oirish folk theme meets Red Hot Chillies. More great drums driving it along in 4''s and 6''s. At the same time. Traditional meets heavy metal with wee sweet bit in the middle. Track 4 - Scottish marching ''trad'' beat song - a ''Leaving Song'' set in who knows what century. Track 5 - East European mandola/bouzouki-flavoured homily about the evils of being a self-centred macho asshole. Jumping in with both feet flying - I don''t think so. Much writing and musicality in this one. Track 6 - the make hits the fan. A rock song assembled in ''prog'' style. The Who and the Beatles lend a hand to tell a hard sore story although he tries to fight away from suicide and make like that. Just go. Track 7 - Country rock - down and out and going nowhere but as musical as ever. A Belfast ''rollin'' and ''tumblin'' song with Keith Richard tele sound. Track 8 - Hold on. just like it says on the tin. Don''t be dead. Keep it going. Done in 6/8 with acoustic DADGAD and all the rest. Lovely bass bit. Very sad. Track 9 - Still scared but tellin'' everyone if I can make it so can you. Done in heavy style. Harsh vocals and Greek chorus, bouzouki and rock guitar pushing it along. Track 10 - Acoustic rock telling a sad song wishing for "the night before the morning after" and "could someone take the time of day". Some lovely arrangements but it breaks my heart to listen to it.
The Others
Track 11 - jumps back to the 60''s complete with juvenile lyrics. A bit angry and driving but with great harmonies. A style exercise. Track 12 - Americana West Coast piece of nonsense - but I like it. Some nice playing. Nice. Track 13 - Country ''n'' Irish two-step. With variations. Another - ''place it in a certain style'' kind of song. But good fun. Old style Saturday night in some Irish dancehall having a bit of a Hooley.
The songs 1 to 10 hang together in sequence as a story. It goes from happy lusty fun thru impatient, careless male selfishness, and hard break-up to a kind of despair pulled back by a voice that keeps saying "Hold on, hang in there, it will get better" and on to the final ''Boston Song'' where he''s so sad and tired of beating himself up and just wants to go away. But still asking "did someone take the time of day".
