Details:
Perhaps God is my sophomore effort in the world of independent recording. New songs kept pouring into my head, so 18 months after the debut of For Such a Time as This, I found a producer and began the process of making record number two. To my great joy, Portland-area producer/engineer Dean Baskerville agreed to take the helm of this project, and we spent 14 days together, over an 8-month span, creating Perhaps God.

When Dean and I met to begin pre-production, he commented on the 70s vibe that he noticed in much of my music. No one else had ever noted this element in my music, but once Dean pointed it out, I could see what he meant. About half of the songs on this CD highlight that sound—inspired by Carole King, the Beatles, and even Olivia Newton John. Track 7 (“Every Day”) also features what my friends and students have called my “Norah Jones” song.

Finally, hidden after the last track is a sample of one of my singing inspirations—my 90-year-old grandmother, Martha Roberts. Her soulful singing permeated the sanctuary of our church throughout my childhood and young adulthood, and I am so pleased to share her voice with the world.

I get lots of questions about the title of the CD. These are the words I wrote for the liner notes:

Perhaps God refers to a story in 1 Samuel. Saul’s son Jonathan, finding himself greatly outnumbered during a war with the Philistines, says to his armor bearer: “Come let us cross over . . . perhaps the Lord will work for us, for the Lord is not restrained to save by many or by few.” And his armor bearer replies: “Do all that is in your heart . . . here I am with you according to your desire” (NAS, 1 Sam. 14:6-7).

This text is a favorite of mine, and it perfectly captures my family’s faith-filled approach to life.
I’ve never been very good at taking risks, but I am learning to embrace the pioneering spirit of my parents, Burt and Pat Roberts, and my grandparents, Evert and Martha Roberts and Paul and Naydeen Taylor. I want that adventurous vision of Grandma Naydeen, who faced storms head-on and relished the idea of new challenges. “What will God do?” she would ask, with joyful anticipation, when she found herself facing seemingly impossible circumstances.

People who are interested in Amy Grant Carole King Norah Jones should consider this download.
