To be in Makoshika State Park, is to know what happened when a river met its sea.
The delta of an ancient river, here is where acres of sediment and clay lay down to form the canyons and caves that stand here today. This ‘bad’ land gave birth to these songs.
Though, I am certainly not the first to find songs lying in its wrinkled skin, when I realize what an extraordinary opportunity it was to grow up literally in its shadow, I am humbled.
I can''t help but try to find a way to express my gratitude for the chance to live in a place that is utterly unlike any other--a place without beaten paths-- a place where the sky becomes your skin-- a place completely full of space.
I''ve found that the mouth of this ancient river doesn''t sing the lonesome, downtrodden blues of lower Mississippi guitars, but the jump-joy blues that spring up from double rainbows that follow its darkest of mid-summer storms.
Mary Overlie, an educator and songwriter living in Southern Minnesota, grew up in Glendive, Montana in the shadow of this ‘hell frozen over’ known as Makoshika State Park. This music is her gift back to this land. All of the proceeds from its sales benefit organizations working for the wild lands of Eastern Montana.
