Born and raised in Columbus, MS, as a little country girl at the age of five I discovered my singing voice. The first singer that caught my ear was Otis Redden and my favorite song was “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay”. I also enjoyed listening to Aretha Franklin. I can still hear my mother saying, baby are you okay because of the way I would be singing Aretha’s songs. It’s like I can hear her saying it right now.
Later on in my teen years, my focus was on dancing and modeling. Once I joined the Church our choir director, Mrs. Mary would go around listening to all the choir members, And she said to me that I hear your voice baby you can sing!” At that time I was afraid to let anyone other than my family hear me sing. I came up in a home where there was music and dancing all the time. My siblings and I had a group called the Browns (not as blessed as the Jackson’s) but my parents were very supportive. One day while singing in the shower my brother had a friend (Keith) over, whom heard me and asked me to join his band. I was only twelve years old at the time he Asked my Dad if I could sing with the band and he agreed can you imagine how shocking it was to me.
During my high school years we won most talent shows. Well here comes the delay in my singing career I fell in love got married and had kids. Just singing around the house for years. I was a military house wife wanting to sing really badly, but my kids came first I decided no I can’t do it. Finally my husband retired and thinking here comes my chance to sing. I received bad news from my doctor saying I would never sing again. These were my words to him “You’re not God! And you can’t tell me that” I wasn’t giving up on my career. I was determined; nothing was going to stop me from singing. I got busy I went through three bands, until I finally got with the band I have now. And they have been there for me. We have had our times but with the love and respect we have for music we are gonna make it as long as they are true to me and I’m true to them.
I have always said my mom will be proud of me I love my mom, she has been my heart beat while dealing with my kids illnesses. My father, my husband and my grand kids gives me the strength to carry on. My God has blessed me in so many ways. I can not do any thing without him.
I have a CD entitled “Why did you walk on my Love”. I had made a statement to myself, one day I will open for BB King and I will meet him. Guess what I have, and I’m so happy that I’m about to live my dream and it’s only a few more steps down the road.
The band is true innovators — their music is unique; it is a jazzy, R&B, southern south type of sound. The band began playing together about seven years ago. Starting with, Curtis B, inviting different member one by one. Until one day everything came together creating a great sound.
The Real Brown Sugar has performed in various places such as Ground Zero, Clarksdale, MS; Fletcher Park, Indianola, MS; TP Harris Elks Lounge, Columbus, MS; Office Sports Bar, Columbus, MS; Anthony’s Lounge, Aliceville AL; El-Tiaki, Tibbee, MS; Civic Centers, WestPoint, Greenwood, and Verona, MS; opening for well known artists as, BB King, Denise LaSalle, Bobby Rush, Love Dr., Sir Charles, the late Jackie Neal, Donny Ray, Willie Clayton OB Buchanan, James Payne, Sheba Potts Wright, Chris Thomas King from the movie “Ray”, and many, many more.
Let me tell you how the name Brown Sugar came to be. My Granddaddy use to say “Earnestine the gale go clean, the sweetest little thing I’ve ever seen”, so I took my last name BROWN and what’s sweet that we have a little bit of in everything we eat? SUGAR! So BAM there it is THE REAL BROWN SUGAR.
