One quality of Annie Hawkins songs is being authentic, especially in relating to one another. Her inspired lyrics and chest thumping rhythms come from her reflection on life.
Annie grew up in New Jersey in a home with her mom and sis. You can hear the story in SISTERS. She started violin and piano at eight and was composing songs at age ten. She was a good kid except when she would sneak over to New York City and get in the bars when she was 14 yrs old. That wasn''t bad enough, she took her younger sister with her a few times.
Annie got low SATs cuz those test DO NOT measure music genius. She went for one year to Five Towns College in Long Island and pumped "MARTIN STRINGS" with Prof. Peter Rogine, jazz exploiter. Annie went to Berklee College of Music for three years until she burned ruts in her clefs and chilled her brains out. After playing in clubs in New York, she went to warm,sunny Arizona and met a "cute guy" and they composed a song together called "With every day, I grow fonder of your face (with every turn of the moon it is easier to trace, how much do I have to say to make this feeling disappear, maybe after your here)." She never recorded this song and soon fell for another guy, a drummer This would become a pattern in her life. Drummer lovers,that is. But, they broke up and she went back to New Jersey--thus the lament,AIRPORT. Actually, there are a dozen songs about this man and their relationship in her albums, Sex Master and Unbound. e.g. "Jelly on the phone, falling from your hand you are still alone, my voice is sticking in your ear...you feel more alone, when you are NOT BY YOURSELF."
Annie returned to Tucson and became a booker at a local club. She is finishing her degree at U of Arizona and teaching youthful personages how to wail on the guitar. Her next music project is coming soon!
