Details:
Laura Wiley, the youngest of four daughters, was born in 1966. She grew up on a twenty-acre farm outside of Bloomington, Indiana, surrounded by many animals. She began playing flute, writing, and drawing around the age of twelve, and has always felt equally compelled to pursue writing, the fine arts and performance.

As a high school student, Laura took private flute lessons with graduate students in flute performance at the Indiana University School of Music. She also studied voice, ballet, modern dance, piano, and guitar, and was active in musical theater, marching band, orchestra, and swing choir. After graduating from high school, she attended Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City, and continued to take flute lessons and play in the pit orchestras of musical theater productions while completing a degree in English.

After graduation, she decided that city life did not suit her, and moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, with the idea of staying for a few months and continuing her creative pursuits. Those three months stretched into almost two decades. She earned a Master’s degree in English from Holy Names University and worked toward a Master’s degree in music (from the same institution) while teaching private flute lessons and literature courses. On the side, she wrote and drew and painted.

A fruitful musical collaboration with a Bay Area pianist led to the recording of two CDs— one of short “classic” works for flute and piano and one of original compositions for flute and piano. These days, Laura plays in various chamber orchestras, the pit orchestras of musical theater productions and as a duo with harp, guitar or piano. In the past few years, she has become increasingly interested in jazz improvisation, and what started out as a flickering desire has ignited into shameless no-holds-barred dabbling. She lives in the suburbs with her husband and six cats, and teaches flute lessons and writing lessons, while pursuing her three areas of creative interest.

Laura is particularly interested in the flute and piano compositions of Gary Schocker, as well as those of other contemporary, yet melodic composers, such as Clark Suprynowicz, Edwin McLean and Nancy Bloomer Deussen. In the genre of jazz, she is a big fan of flutists Hubert Laws and the late Herbie Mann, and thinks no jazz pianist can match the musical stylings of Bill Evans.
