Details:
I started playing guitar at the age of 15. Played clubs in Birmingham when I was 19 and recorded two songs at Johnny Sandlin''s studio in Decatur. Around this time my father got really nervous because he realized this was something I had passion for and was not just a passing phase. So he contacted Sam Phillips, they had gone to school together in Florence , and asked him if he would listen to my two songs. Dad gave me the address and I put a cassette tape in the mail to Memphis. About a week later Mr. Phillips called me at my college dorm room and said he liked what I was doing and wanted to forward the songs to his sons. I was blown away and hooked after that. One of the two songs on that cassette tape was "Easy Girl" which I have never recorded for release until now. We were goofing around one night at rehersal and I played it for the fellas. So it finally finds a home on "Volkswagen Catfish". Home (Muscle Shoals) is a big deal to us. Our Musical and spiritual inspiration comes from home. Some of our heros are David Hood,Jimmy Johnson,Roger Hawkins, Barry Becket,Donnie Fritts,Spooner Oldham, and Dan Penn. We are inspired spiritually by the Tennessee River. The Native Americans who were here before us called this area the "Singing River" and we believe it.
We have spent a year and a half making this record. We did release a live CD, 2007s "Live Bait",while we were working on V.C. We recorded at the Nutthouse in Sheffield with Jimmy Nutt recording and producing. The love we have for the Muscle Shoals Music community has been returned to us ten fold. Donna Jean (Elvis,Grateful Dead) sang background vocals, her son Zion Godchaux(Boombox) played a skank guitar part, Kelvin Holly(Little Richard) played a guitar solo and loaned us guitars and sitars. Alan Schulman and Mac McAnally let us do overdubs at LaLa Land. I have done alot of the writing in the past but this record is a move to a more complete band. Rob,Clint,David, and myself all have a song on this one. Daniel is a writer as well.
We live a typical band''s life when we are on the road. Last week we drove two hours to Guntersville on Thursday. Got back to Muscle Shoals around 4:30am . Got up at 10:30 and drove 5 and a half hours to Columbus Georgia , set up , played a two hour set for a street party, broke down, set up in a club downtown, played a 4 hour show, broke down, drove 5 and a half hours back to Muscle Shoals , I went to my day job , got off at 3 , and we drove up and played in Iron City Tennessee that night. We consume mass quantities of Whiskey just to make it challenging. We have also been shown alot of love on the road. We had a three night run up in Ohio. We had a Thursday in Dayton, a Friday in Yellowsprings, and Saturday in Columbus. We found out about a week before the trip that the Dayton club and the Yellowsprings club had their differences and we would have to choose which club we wanted to play. So the only fair way,in our opinion, was to honor the club that booked us first. Which was the Thursday in Dayton. We were left hanging on the Friday. The day before we left for the trip I got an email from a guy named Tom Blessing asking if David would like to do a call in interview for a radio station in Dayton to plug the show. He then asked where we were staying and when I told him "the van" he offered to put us up without even meeting us. We stayed at his place that Thursday night, got up the next day and when Tom got home from work that afternoon he took us out to a place called the Funky Bean Farm and people started showing up with all this food! We set up and played, crashed at Toms that night, and then drove to Columbus on Saturday. There were two popular local bands on the bill with us in Columbus (the Brown Notes and Revelation Revolution). We were to split the door 3 ways. After the show both bands insisted on giving us their cut which allowed us to get a hotel room on the way home. Needless to say we are humbled and inspired by this. We thank everyone who already digs Worms and encourage new fans to rip the celephane off of "Volkswagen Catfish" and turn the disc up LOUD!!!!!!
