Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, FERD, actual name “Clifford Jean”, says he has been musically inclined for many years. He goes on to say “ I used to write R&B songs from when I was about 11 years old. I used to let my older cousin and friends sing ‘em. It was fun because as kids, even as adults, we all like to portray famous people like athletes and singers so it made me happy to play a part in that. When I was, like, 16 years old I wrote this song called “ De Ja Vu” for my homeboy and his singing group. They loved it. As a matter of fact, they performed it for some guy, I can’t remember his name he wanted to manage the group and have me write songs for them. I was real cool with that. It was all good, but, then, my focus was beginning to change. I was beginning to focus on trying to survive.
Although FERD’s musical talents we’re beginning to be noticed, it was hard for the young man to stay concentrated on writing songs and keeping up with his school work with the fact he was fighting constantly in his neighborhood. “it was a fucked up situation. I can’t really explain how it even started….
“In my early years I seen a lot of the kids I used to hang with disappear. I didn’t know what happened to them. Then to find out they we’re getting locked up for selling drugs, stabbin’ folks up, robbin’- it hurt my heart. But as time moves on so do you, ya know. Believe, though, when my niggas came back home, I was like “ what’s good’ nigga!!!”, how you been, man!!!”- showin’ love. But you wouldn’t believe how funny actin’ dudes we’re after doing a little time. Niggas came back lookin’ at me like I’me the one who committed the crime for not getting’ locked up when they did. Like what the fuck I look like going to school and getting my education and shit. Givin’ me that “ I’m in the hood, so behave like it” type attitude, ya know. What I needed to do was start killin’, dealin’, and robbin’ dudes in order to belong here. At that point in my life, I wasn’t with all that and for that reason I was fighting, getting jumped and shot at. On some shit like “ if you won’t act like us, you can’t be around us”.
So after awhile with things like that, I lost the inspiration to R&B music. R&B music was mostly about love and I wasn’t feeling too- loving. I tried to continue to write but it was sounding so repetitive. So eventually Rap became my source of expression. My life was making a big change for the worse. Basically, the things I was trying to stay away from and getting into fights for not doing, I started to embrace. Why, I really can’t say. All I know is things I never acknowledged, I was
Acknowledging, things I never thought I’d do, I was doing, and the life I was living was now fit predominantly to be explained in Rap. So here I am- Rapping”.
