Details:
Randy Heidema is a Nashville-based pianist, vocalist and songwriter. His music has been used in various television and film documentaries throughout his career and is now showcased on his first solo project, Between a Laugh and a Tear. While influenced by Elton John, Shawn Colvin, Train, and Ben Folds among others, Randy''s music is truly original, blending elements of those styles to create a sound uniquely his own.

Born and raised in Holland, Michigan, Randy has been playing piano and singing for most of his life. He moved to Denver in 1995, where he wrote "Emily" and pursued recording projects at area studios. Eventually, he moved back to Michigan, where the band Obsessed Deformed Bullfrogs was born. The group enjoyed regional success, quickly developing a following for their original style and entertaining live shows. In 2001, while touring with them, Randy recorded a few solo demos to submit to various labels in Los Angeles. Upon receiving some rave reviews and a complimentary phone call from the president of Taxi, he decided to seriously pursue his solo career.

Randy moved to Nashville in January 2003. Between a Laugh and a Tear represents a personal journey about life, love, and leaving home. Most of the songs were inspired during his first year in Music City, as Randy learned firsthand the ups and downs of the business. He alludes to everything from panic attacks to fast food, from the magic of stick bugs to stumbling onto love, to trying to find the balance between being lonely and just wanting to be left alone. Each song conveys a universal message, from the haunting melodies and string arrangements on "Lullaby," to the live, open mic feel on "Emily," to the spontaneous energy of "Yeah Yeah Yeah." There is even room for comic relief; listeners catch a glimpse of Randy''s bizarre sense of humor in the off-kilter "Intermission."

Well-written and beautifully played, not to mention masterfully mixed and produced by Nashville''s James Waddell, Between a Laugh and a Tear is a labor of love not to be missed.
