Synopsis of Get It Off Me
Henry and Henrietta Bumgartner are the typical suburban couple, struggling to get by. Their routine lives are lightened only by their playful affection with each other. When the Devil cruises into heaven to propose a wager to test their loyalty, God is convinced his good-hearted young couple will pass the test. The Devil, goaded by his henpecking wife, tries a reverse temptation strategy to destroy Henry and Henrietta by driving them apart. He arranges for Henry to receive a promotion to the "fifth floor" from his overbearing boss, and then has Henry''s rich Aunt Edna drop by and give Henry and Henrietta all her money. Act Two begins with Henry and Henrietta in their new circumstances, rich and too busy for each other. The Devil''s plan seems to be working. Henry''s friend, carefree spirit Eddie, drops by to tempt Henry to abandon his frenetic lifestyle and "see the world." Henrietta''s friend Delores tempts Henrietta with an account of the liberation she feels after her recent divorce. Elmer Elkins drops in to bandy backyard theology with Henry. But these people only have the effect of bringing Henry and Henrietta to see how important they are to each other. With the courage of his new insight, Henry stands up to his boss, and then he and Henrietta decide to give Aunt Edna her money back. Relieved, they find their old love and companionship once more. The Devil, defeated, pays a last visit to God, who concludes the play with a gospel-style "sermon" affirming the essential goodness of his creation. The play features fifteen original songs.
