Born in Toronto, Ontario with a move to Whitehorse in the Yukon Territories ten months later, Avelyn Waldman started singing long before she remembers that or in fact anything else, and it’s been impossible to stop her since then. At age four she was given a guitar and at twelve after another move this time to Vancouver, BC she finally tried playing the instrument. So her career as a singer/songwriter began. From observations of everyday life to romantic frustrations to ideas about how best to make our mark on this changing, bizarre world, everything was soon being put to music. Listening to and writing music kept her relatively sane through high school and upon her release she set out on a volunteer program which brought her to Nelson and the exciting opportunity to make a four song demo CD.
This is not that demo.
These are her own favourites of the material she’s written so far, a mixed bag of the serious and the silly. From the simple, bare-hearted dithering of “Coffee”, to the resignation of “Penelope,” to the stubborn hope of “Before We Die” she invites the listener into her head and her heart. These are the words she couldn’t keep back, the secrets and stories, the impulses behind her insubordination.
