ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: HILL OF GIANTS
Songwriter and Guitarist Bob Globus started writing music with his friend, keyboardist Tony Cario, when they were about fourteen. More than ten years later, the two are still writing and recording music together and their new band, Hill of Giants, has just emerged from the studio after recording their second full-length album.
Bob Globus is passionate about his music and the driving purpose behind it. Since he was twelve he has been helping to lead worship at various churches. By age fourteen, Bob realized that his method of worship would include writing and playing music something that Bob feels is a wonderful opportunity for ministry. Bob found a like-minded confidant in his cousin and best friend Tony Cario, and the two began writing music though it was difficult as Tony was living Pittsburgh while Bob was in Maryland.
Over the years, Tony and Bob would go on to play in other bands, but the dream of forming their own band was never far from their minds.
Bob joined with his first real band at age sixteen, a high-school group called Catalyst, which lasted only until Bob went away to college. While in the university Bob refined his writing abilities and learned to play guitar. Later the band reunited and changed their name to Chechana. Bob''s devotion was evident even at this early stage as he would make a four hour round trip just to attend practice with the band. Alas, Chechana would never advance to the state Bob was hoping for and so he moved onto other projects.
Bob''s second band was an ill-fated project called "Boink" named after the sound that a cartoon character makes when bouncing off a rock. "I hate to admit this but it took me a while to figure out why ''Boink'' was not such a good name for a Christian band." When the band met at a friend''s church for their first gig, the announcement of their name met with silence from the crowd and they were not asked for a repeat performance. The bass player was so embarrassed by the event that the band never really recovered.
After several unsuccessful bands fell apart, Bob drew upon his faith to lead him in the right direction. He and Tony still had dreams of creating their own band, but other priorities would take precedence.
During their years between college and the formation of Hill of Giants, Bob and Tony were finally living in the same town, and were able to start working on music together. During these years Tony met and married his wife Dana, while Bob met his future wife Alison.
Ever driven, Bob could imagine a band that would bring all the joys of his life together. With this vision in mind, Bob convinced Alison to begin taking lessons in electric bass. Meanwhile Tony and Bob were meeting and practicing whenever they had free time. They would recruit other musicians to play from time to time but nothing really seemed to stick.
It wasn''t long before Alison had developed some considerable skill on the bass and was able to accompany Bob and Tony at their practice. Their friend Justin was recruited to play lead guitar and the band was starting to take shape.
Bob and Tony still met with more trouble, however, as it was nearly impossible to find a drummer who would stay for any length of time. Adding to this difficulty, after many years of playing together, Justin decided to leave the band in search of other things.
After trying, unsuccessfully, to recruit a drummer into the band Tony decided to buy a drum set and become the band''s full time drummer. Tony''s drumwork improved quickly and Bob concentrated on playing lead guitar, while Alison played bass. As a three piece, the band began to make some real progress, and after much thought and prayer they adopted the name Hill of Giants.
After years of playing together, the band was offered the opportunity to assist in a traveling ministry practice and, with this new motivation, they went into the studio in January of 2005 as a three piece. Bob, Tony, and Alison were prolific in the studio drawing upon years of material and recorded two full albums: Eureka a 12-track rock/ alternative album and Simple Songs, a 7-track collection of worship songs.
After some successful studio time and a number of concerts performed in various venues, the band was starting to come together but all felt that they still needed another member to reach their full potential. In 2002 the band had met with drummer Brad Vetch, Tony''s brother in law. Both Bob and Tony felt that Brad was a perfect addition to the band but Brad was unwilling to make the full commitment at that time. Over the years Tony, Bob, and Alison prayed and hoped and, in June of 2005, their prayers were answered. Brad decided to join the band full time, allowing Tony to move to keyboards and giving the band a newfound complexity.
Finally, after much faith and effort, Hill of Giants has arrived in their present glory. Through all the changes, the band''s music has remained rooted in the principles of their faith and in the creation of good music. Each member of the band has reached a level of skill that allows them to function as a family fusing their disparate personalities into a vibrant form of musical worship that transcends their individual abilities. As a foursome Hill of Giants has become a band to be reckoned with and although there will be many hills to climb in the future, Hill of Giants is standing tall.
