Details:
Minister Russell Kelly Witcher, Jr. is a native of Gretna, VA who now resides in Graham, NC. He has been actively involved in the music ministry now for about 24 years. His spiritual journey started at 9 years of age at CherryStone Baptist Church in Chatham,VA. There he begin playing piano for choirs of the church around 13 or 14 years of age. These early years were a training ground for a time such as this. He started out playing around on a piano that his mother, Vernell Witcher had purchased during a time she was taking lessons. The first song that he learned to play was "I Don''t Feel No Ways Tired" by the late Rev. James Cleveland. As time went on, he continued to strengthen his ear to hear musically. Two musicians were also instrumental in shaping Minister Witcher into the musician he is today: the late Mrs. Alpha Owens and Bishop Randolph S. Witcher. Also, Minister Witcher continued expanding his musical gifts by participating in marching and concert band during last 5 years of school. This was a great training as well as far as reading music and learning theory. In 1988, Russell relocated to Alamance County, NC to pursue a degree from Elon University. While studying at Elon, he took private music lessons from Mrs. Vivian Dula who was one of the instructors. He also participated in the Gospel Choir, Jazz Ensemble for a semester and took several music theory courses. In 1992, he received the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and a minor in Religion. During his college years, he remained active in the music ministry through providing music for the following: Elon Baptist Church Gospel Chorus, First Baptist Church, Gibsonville, NC, Deliverance Tabernacle, Graham, NC, Jeffries Cross Baptist Church, Burlington, NC and Mack''s Chapel Ensemble of Mack''s Chapel United Holy Church in Altamahaw, NC. In the late 90''s, Russell begin to cultivate his talent through songwriting. Although "Be Ready" was written during his high school years, he did not flow in the "writing" phase until the late 90''s. The songs came out of experiences, study of the Word of God, and sometimes dreams. Other times, songs would come from just playing melodies on the keyboard. In 2001, he released a CD entitled "Caught Up" featuring Yvette E and Inner-Faith Chorale. This too was a learning experience because he never recorded or had anyone to "steer" him in the right direction. After receiving constructive criticism, feedback, and support from family and friends, Russell felt in his heart that this project needed to be redone. Many individuals who heard "Caught Up" stated "you need to record your own songs because you know what God gave you". After much prayer, growing and regrouping, God made it possible for that to happen. In 2006, Russell stepped out on faith and started pursuing his first solo album entitled "Sacred Notes From a Minister of Music". The album consists of all the songs from "Caught Up" rerecorded as well as instrumentals and a new song "Prayer Will Make A Difference". Minister Witcher prays that everyone will be blessed and encouraged through this CD. He testifies that going through some storms, hurdles, and setbacks were well worth it because it made him a better person. Just like the songs had to undergo a "makeover"; so did Russell. First of all, there was a spiritual makeover involving changing some theological beliefs/convictions. There was some humbling and attitude adjustments done. There were changes done in appearance as well as in health. Through God''s help, Russell has adapted a healthier lifestyle and has lost between 50-60 pounds. Russell testifies to the glory of God that these things are possible with the proper mindset. In closing, "Sacred Notes From a Minister of Music" is a musical illustration of the makeover in Russell''s life. Russell solicits your prayers and support as he continues to follow Christ and flow in the things of God.
